That was close! Thank god for boat rules!

So I went fishing with a buddy and we were working the shore pretty hard with wacky worms rigged with a 3/8 oz wacky jig head. There were a ton of fallen and over-hanging trees making for some great target practice. Anyway, my buddy gets caught in a tree about 15 feet up (I know....I know...). So he tries pulling and pulling but it just looks like a lost cause....but he keeps at it...trying to whip it out. During this process I'm re-tying my jig due to damaged line and the moment I'm done I pull me head up and look to see how he's progressing then BAMMMMM!!!! He managed to get the jig head out but it rocketed straight into the middle of my left lense on my sunglasses. The shot resonated all around the frame and hurt like hell for a couple of seconds and took me another couple of seconds to figure out what had happened. Had I not been wearing glasses I am fairly confident there would have been irreparable damage. Glasses and lense were fine....no damage, and more importantly I still have the use of my left eye.

I have had a rule in my boat for many years that you don't fish with me unless you are wearing sunglasses. Well I can happily say I'm glad I followed it too.

Just thought I would throw this piece of advice out there.

Sunglasses are always a must! This happens more frequently than you think. Glad to hear ur alright.

I believe there are some fishing glasses that are made specifically to withstand hit from lures like that .

We once got into a “sticky” situation in regards to safety precautions when fishing.

I must have been 16 years old at the time, my father was sitting at the front of the boat casting a DD22, I was standing up next to him casting away. There wasn’t enough room between each other (we were 3 in the boat), and an overhead cast with the DD22 smacked me right on the head.
I had one treble in the temple, one in my cheek bone. I was very lucky not to lose an eye.

Knocked the wind right out of me, don’t really remember the ride into the hospital.

Since then, we’ve always been aware of our surroundings, who’s in the boat, and distance between each other, or other anglers when casting.
We also never bend the rod towards the other person when caught in a tree, same applies when landing a fish.
Always wear sunglasses!

That is scary and you did get lucky. I always fear when someone gets stuck in a tree and they start yanking....never good.

wow! glad you are OK!

I would say that saving that stuck hook is not really worth it, you don't have to dig to deep to find serious injury or death with similar situations
