Freeze your rod holder into the ice. If you don't use tip ups you can take the slush from a freshly drilled hole and pack it around your wire rod holders base. Freezes pretty quickly. Even if you mess up your drag setting you don't have to watch your rod going submarine.

Have a buddy that knows way more about ice fishing then u and go out with him as much as u can.

1- spray your auger with Pam veg oil spray to keep the ice from accumulating on it.
2- use pull through nylon straps on your pop up instead of the strings they come with.

Wax your sled for easier pulling for those foot bound anglers.

I have been using the same "trick" for years. Listen - this is a bit complicated and may not look so good in writing LOL!!!
First we always position the hut so the end with the 3 holes is vertical (going left to rt or visa versa) with the current I have a 10" auger, punch one hole, over lap it by a few inches and punch another hole to connect the two. I then use a horizontal jig called a flyer (glow in the dark models) with a stinger hook attached. The way I hook the minnows is through their mouth passing the tip of the hook out of the gills, turning the minnow on its side I then pass the hook through the meat behind its head. Thus the minnow is hooked and lying on its side... I then run the stinger on the top side of the minnow and attach it near the tail. Then with a slow steady jig into the current, to one side of the hole flip it and let it swim back to the other and repeat about a foot off the bottom (for depth control I use the floor of the hut to gauge how far off the bottom im jigging.
We catch probably 70% of all walleye on the stinger and this technique out fishes anything any one has tried in our hut since we put it up. Im going out this sat, if you want a demo/visual shoot me a pm.
