Spring Speck-ing...and a few lakers

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Spring Speck-ing...and a few lakers

Post by Fishoholic »

Another May has come and gone. This is one of my favorite times of the year, open water fishing is in full swing and May marks the month of two anticipated annual troutings. The first trip is to my buddy's camp in one of the various Z.E.Cs in Quebec. This year there was a lot less rain than the previous year and a ton of fish came out to play:

Switch over to some lakers:

The second annual trip has been one my Dad and I have cleared our May long weekend schedule for the rest of our lives. My dad's buddy and some family members have been going on this trip with their dads for about 30 years and when the opportunity opened up for my dad and I a few years back there was no way we could turn it down. This year over 100 brookies were caught between the 6 of us. What a weekend.

On the way out we had the chance to stare down a big wild cat, not sure if it was a lynx or a bobcat or what but it was big. It was bigger looking than my dog (a 69 pound lab mix). I have been to this lake 3 times, seen 2 wild cats in my life, and they were both at this camp. Pretty cool ending to a stellar weekend. I haven't been out fishing as much as I would like to with the wedding planning in full swing but hopefully I will be able to get out more in June. Good luck all and have a great summer!

Specktacular report !
Was wondering where abouts you were catching big hauls of specks,
now I know, up in bobcat country. :)

Fantastic Speck and Laker report. Were you actually catching some in the moving water from that last picture. If so, that would be a blast. I have caught some half that size in streams and had me stumbling knee deep to try and keep up. Out of curiosity, were you near a freezer or ice to pack some home, or smoke any?. Or do they all get eaten in the bush. We started smoking some, and they made good treats on the portages:-)

Thanks guys!

Hey Banjo, Yep we had lots of ice ready and at the camp on the second weekend there is a propane fridge and freezer on hand. We ate a bunch out there but also got to bring some home. I gave some to a neighbour across the street and they invited my fiancée and I over for dinner. He cooked some laker and brookies in his smoker, first time trying smoked fish, and man was it awesome! I'll be looking at getting a smoker in the future for sure!

And yep we caught a bunch in the river. Some years past about half our fish come out of the river. One of the most peaceful ways of Fishin in my mind!

Hey Lenny, first area limit is 10 specs each or a mix of 2 lakers/splake and 8 specs.Second weekend limit is 15 specs each!

Nice specks! Some real chunks in the mix there.

That's a heck of a haul, are you sure you left some for next year? ;-)

Yup there will be plenty for next year. Like I was saying, they have been going for around 30 years and get their limit, or close too, every year and there is still plenty of fish for the next year. I wouldn't go around keeping that many in let's say calabogie but up there they have a real good naturally reproducing population of specs. Plus we pay good money to go up there so why not bring home some meat for the freezer.

Enjoyed this one lvace, it reminded me of past trips to Zec Dumoine in the mid to late 90's. The fishing was always good and our small group of friends made the best of every moment. Would like to one time go back there as it was big part of a beginning in my love for fishing. Your group slayed 'em, but I can bet that was only half the fun while there.

And it's funny you mentioned a cat. The first lynx I ever saw was there, same with moose. Wonderful country.
