May Two-Four Fishin' Report

A mini-report of an amazing weekend fishing!
Saturday I headed to the Ottawa River on the ‘hunt’ for gar. From the advice I’d been given – Saturday wasn’t the best weather for gar bites as it was cool, cloudy and sometimes raining. When the sun came for a few intermittent moments late in the day, we saw gar, but couldn’t get a strike.
But in the meantime it was a pike bonanza! We found a few bays that held many and had some fun with them.
This guy hit like a hammer and took my entire bait and hook in his mouth and snapped it shut. Thankfully Marty is a good net man and had the pliers handy. I ended the day with a redhorse. This little guy has a face only a mother could love. Gosh darn he was cute. So expressive! And he felt dolphin-smooth! And my weekend ended with a trip to the Mississippi yesterday. One of the (OVSB) club members put out an email offering up an open seat and I jumped at the chance! It was a beautiful day and the pike bite was on. I was having a devil of a time getting them to take the hook. I lost more fish than I caught… so that was humbling. Near the end of our outing, I was fishing a crank. The water was really choppy at this point as the wind was up pretty high, so I couldn’t even see where my bait was. And I felt the strike. Due to missing so many fish, I set the hook like my life depended on it, and reeled in…it’s a small, OOS largie… oh no.. it’s a perch!
