Hardwater Fun

Post by riverdog »

What a great season its been even with the young lad playing that other Canadian winter sport every Saturday & Sunday this year.
Image
As always first ice brings Crappie & this year was no different my favorite jig is a teardrop sugar coated that glows green favorite bait is maggots. I find they bite better at night in the early season, our best night yet produced 40 plus.

BOQ Action has been hot so far this season with 3 trips in hoping for another 2 at least to close it out. The Buckshot Rattle continues to out perform all others at least for me.

A few pics from a solo morning was blast, but I forgot my 8" & only had my 6" was fun landing them but hard to get a pic went 4-5

Chasing Eyes on the Larry
Rumors of knee high snow in the BOQ forced us to hunt for some walleye on local water. I have fished a few spots in previous yrs but with very limited success. Fast forward to 2013-14 Winter which in my opinion deserves a gold medal for kicking butt. Spots where I haven't seen ice now hold 10-14" & a lot more places come into play. The current was very fast a 3/4oz jig would go a meter under your hole, it took 3 holes to set the vex up. The hot lure was Mancho Minnow I would go 1oz next time though.

Here's to hoping for a great extended 2nd half! Frozen lines!

Great stuff fella. Love the diversity!

Been to the Q once and wailed em. Awesome year down there but conditions are now a mess...not sure I'll bother trying to get down again before season closes.

Nice to see ya found some local haunts to pick on em, I doubt you'll be standing on that spot every year...

Solid report RD, that's a whole mess of fish!.
Don't see too many lampreys and fallfish ice fishing.
I did Huff's for my first time Feb. 1st and there wasn't as much snow as everyone was saying, sure quads were
getting stuck some, caught 2 walleye which was good compared to others that day.
Nice to know the Larry has good walleye spots too, its a long river with lots of spots to try, glad you were rewarded.
Great job on keeping your boy active in the great outdoors.

Good for you getting the youngster out! I have to agree that hockey is also important for a young fellow, so he can become a well-rounded Canadian citizen! Hope he will keep an interest in both ice sports!

Not sure what you mean by mess? ... I was on Quinte briefly this weekend (coming home from Simcoe) and the ice was good, about a foot of snow but no slush at all.

The area I was fishing is boasting nearly 16 inches of snow and huge drifts. Sled travel only to even attempt to get to it and then you're standing in snow to your knee. With the poor reports I've heard from the past two weeks down there I'll likely be looking elsewhere to get my rod bent...

Most of our lakes have very deep snow now, and yes past your knees on most of them. Unless a person has a skidoo, or is young and fit enough to strap on snowshoes to trek through the deep stuff, (Neither of which applies to me) the snow is restricting access to some spots. I also have been hearing reports of very spotty success on Quinte of late.
