Well...I am extatic Me and my buddy Derek went to check out the rapids and do a little top water. We started of the point and had no luck. We then moved down to the outflow of the rapids. I Then tied on a Storm Wild eye (white) and first cast into the flow BANG..MUSKIE This was my very first MUSKIE. pics will be one soon. SHe was 34". No huge but perfect for my first. Anyway, the fishing slowed down and it began to rain so we decided to through some topwater into the top of the rapids. Dereks first cast.BANG he had a huge hit...no takers. He waited and gave it another small pop and bang the fish leaped out of the water. He then fought the damb thing for at least 5 min and he finaly got it to the dock. So I had to lie on my tummy and grab her in. SHE WAS HUGE! This was his very first MUSKIE and it measured 45" and wieghed 18lbs.(Is this accurate MUSKIE guys?) and wHAT what a pleasure holding such a huge and powerfull fish. What a rush. WE both are so happy SO this concludes our shore fishing experience tonite The best part is is that it is Dereks B-day tomorrow!

18 lbs is a little on the light side for a 45" fish, unless it was on the skinny side. Possible, though.

Thanks all. Pics are being developed as we speak so craker you will get your pic soon. Black Rapids is the deadest water on the Rideau. Never had anything decient exept those Muskie. It is off of Prince of Whales/Hunt cluc area.

As per the weight of her , the scale used was a new Rapela 25lbs spring scale, so accuracy is questionable.

Just an FYI guys, you should not be weighing muskies (or big pike for that matter) on scales. In fact, you should not be holding them vertically at all. You should always hold big fish like this horizontally so that the whole fish is supported throughout their body. Put one hand on the gill plate, and the other hand (or full arm) under the belly of the fish so that it is supported, and the weight is distributed evenly throughout the fish. Here is an example:



Holding them vertically by the gill plate, or weighing them on a scale puts enormous pressure on parts of the fishes body that aren't designed to support that weight. Biologists who have studied these fish find that holding these fish in such a manner can do irreparable damage to the gills, spine, and other working organs of the fish. Such damage is not usually evident to the angler. When the fish is released, it may look as though it swims away unharmed, but it could potentially die days later. I have articles on this subject that I will reference in a later post if you are interested.

If you want to get a weight of a muskie, take a measurement of its length, and its girth. Use this chart to estimate the weight of your fish: http://www.muskiescanada.ca/Files/weight_chart.pdf

I hate to nag on this one guys, but it is a subject I feel pretty strongly about, and I feel its important to share this information with other anglers.
Muskie are pressured enough, so I think we all need to do our part to ensure they are still around for our kids to catch.
