Usually this means I take the boat out and go hunting for some Larry gators but this year I had a different idea.
I wanted something bigger and the plan was to hopefully hook into a Big Larry Carp.
The last time I had set out to catch carp was a few years back when I had caught my one and only up until this past weekend. It was a (guesstimated) 7-9 lber, caught in a creek behind my old house on a 5'6" medium-light rod.
I remember not being properly equipped for the task. I remember thinking I was going to get spooled. I remember thinking, "what did I get myself into?". And I remember I had a freakin' blast!

As a lot of people know, the stretch of river near the Long Sault parkway is world class when it comes to fishing for big carp but I was looking for somewhere closer to my campground or better yet, in it.
Fast-forward to this past weekend...
Saturday I headed out near an area where I had seen carp in previous years while fishing for pike.
I chummed an area with corn and stuck around for a few hours but nothing was going on at all so I accepted defeat and ended the day.
On Sunday I headed back to see if there was any action near the area I had chummed. Again I didn't see anything and so I moved on in search of a new location.
I ended up finding a canal that connects to the main river... It was packed with carp! ...but I think they had something on their mind, and it wasn't eating.

For good reason I dubbed this, "The Love Canal".

With the type of activity going on in there I figured there was little chance of actually hooking into a fish but I tried anyway. I set my line and tossed out some corn.
I suppose these sort of activities can sometimes bring on the munchies and about 20 minutes later I hooked into and netted my first Larry carp at 9.8 lbs. A PB.

As dinner time approached, it started to rain and I packed it up feeling satisfied that I had caught a fish.
The next morning I had breakfast and headed back to "The Love Canal" with my son.
I'm not sure what had happened the night before but it looked like the party had ended and surface movement was minimal to non-existent.
I tossed out some corn anyway and set my line.
Between listening to music, catapulting corn, playing with the iPhone and chasing geese we kept ourselves entertained but no takers.

After lunch I headed back solo. Tossed out more corn and waited...
...and waited...
...and waited...
...and then, a wonderful sound filled the area... the sound of the baitrunner clicking... FISH ON!
This one felt a lot better than the first but I took my time not wanting to lose it.
It had buried itself in some weeds a couple times which made it difficult to retrieve as I didn't want to rip the hook out of it's mouth.
A few minutes later... I had landed a new PB at 25.4 lbs!

Fun times! It's like catching 5 nickels in one shot! Make that 5 nickles - driving a bulldozer.

I'll be at it again for sure in hopes of catching a 6 nickel'r or more!
FYI, I don't know what the bubbles are and I don't want to know.

Cheers!
