First attempt at a report (with image)

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

First attempt at a report (with image)

Post by Laker_Taker »

Went out a ways back now (January 9th) with the boys in search of the wiley splake. Met up at the Park N' Ride in Kanata at 5:30, got to our lake soon after sun up. Was feeling like a skunker of a day through most of the morning. I did mark one on the X-67 and had one to the hole but lost it late morning. Again, felt the skunk looming. Then my set line outside the Frabil went off. I wasn't so smooth resetting my drag and finally getting to feel the fish at the end of the line but got him onto the ice; a small one probably just under a pound. Felt the pressure off. So, back to the hut. Buddy boy beside me is hand jigging and feels a heavy tug. Alerts me that a fish is near. I tense and sure 'nuff my rod bends over. Sweet! Number two on. This one feels bigger. Just how big and will it stay on? Got it near the hole, enough for my buddy to see its a nice 'un. The fish peeled out some line a couple of times on nice runs after getting it close again. Love those runs a char will make (splake are char right?). Char x Char = Char I say. Anyway. It finally pops its head upward through the hole as it tires. My landing buddy (who may I say had every excuse to bail this day; his back was so bad) is on his hands and knees scooping up this fish. Missed on his first couple of attempts but then had it on the ice for me. We figured (although no scale or measurement was taken) about 3.5-4 lbs. Not huge but my PB for sure. By then we had our other two friends coaching us to get this fish up. I must say I had the luck that day getting 3 in all and the 'Moose' got on the board with his first ever splake. Great day out, good to be on the board in '11. Now, lets see if I can figure out how to post my pic ...

Hi;
Nice report and welcome.
Although Lakers and Speckles, bread together = (Splake) are from the Char family,
they are unique to their own species.

Great splake!

I loved catching them on Otter lake near me when they stocked them. I've never seen a fish repeatedly attack a lure like a splake will. Lots of fun when you are in 8 feet of water and can watch the action down the hole! They are a great fight.

Good job Laker Taker.
