PB Dinosaur

Post by muskie_magnet »

Got out yesterday after lunch for a few hours of muskie fishing with Big C. There were 5 or 6 other boats in the parking lot - taking advantage of the good weather.

After maybe an hour of trolling, I put on a depth raider and we target the 10 - 12 foot line. Just as Big C lets me know we've gone to 5 feet of water, I get what feels like a clump of weeds on the line. As I reel in, the clump of weeds starts to fight back. Not a lot of fight, but it won't come off the bottom so I'm thinking Walleye.

Turns out it was about a 20" sturgeon. Prehistoric looking thing for sure with skin like sandpaper ! Big C chimes in "You caught a dinosaur .."

Seems strange, but it was cleanly hooked in the corner of the "mouth" on the middle treble hook. Has anybody else caught a sturgeon while trolling ??

Turns out that was the only fish for the day, but it's never a bad outing when you put a PB in the boat.

Just never know whet your going to get on the Ottawa that's for sure...would have preferred a Musky but hey we still got to break in the new Frabill.

Here's a couple pics of the fish, as you can see by the release shot he was no worse for wear and still full of energy.

Congrats on the sturgeon.

Although I've taken a handful of those fish during our years we stayed at Laurentian View, they were all taken with bait on the bottom.

I caught one on the ottawa 2 years ago trolling for muskies with a 10inch jake. Unfortunately it was hooked in the top of the head, but it was fine and had a healthy release. It was the first time I had ever seen one. Cool fish for sure.Image
