backwoods bassin'

A buddy and I have been making a tradition of a once-a-year fish-off, this year we decided to try to find a remote back-lake that was rumoured to have largemouth. We weren't sure what we'd find, but we had a few back-ups planned.

Luckily the leaves were out in full force, there was wildlife kicking around, and the rumours proved true, the little lake in the bush was crammed with largies. We fished a total of 9 hours and caught 148, no real tanks but all but 2 were bigger than 12 inches, with 14% greater than 17" (We keep track of these things).

Ended up with some good pictures, a whole pile of memories, some very sore thumbs.

Here's the montage...

What worked:

Doing some homework and finding fish that had never seen a bait and putting ANYTHING in front of them. Topwater, jigs, spinnerbaits, crankbaits, tubes, you name it. I ripped a branch off a tree with a spinner bait and a bass hit the branch halfway back to the boat.

Honda Ridgeline

What didn't work:

Forgetting the rainpants, I got soaked on the walk in.

Hope you enjoyed,

Matt

My kinda trip guys ... I have one question ... how do you research to find "remote back lakes" ??? Do you simply look on the map for smaller lakes off the beaten track that others would not bother fishing? I had this in mind for my latest rip .... but we simply didn't have time to get to them.

In any case keep these spots to yourself ... you've earned it ...

Roughing it (and getting soaked) vs. 148 bass....hmmmm, I think it was a good deal.

Owww to those burned thumbs. But again, worth it!

What a gorgeous lake and stunning scenery (even a moose)! Foliage is ahead of where we are down here. Just gorgeous!

I liked your tips -- not sure if I'm going to tie on any tree branches, but it sure gives a good idea of how aggressive some of those bass were!!!

Wow, lots of great reports on here this a.m.!

That's cool to go hoppin into the bush for Largies.....I bet there are lakes with giants in them that have never even seen a jig in their lives......

Good to see ya back posting Matt.
