Resurrecting Damaged Rods

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Resurrecting Damaged Rods

Post by wolfe »

Has anyone ever bothered to use a pole that has had its tip broke off?

I'm not talking about just the eyelet, but the tip itself -- maybe the last 4 or 5 inches?

We have a nice EXOS rod that would make a great kid's size pole for fishing pike. It was a fairly heavy rod to start. With the tip off, and an eyelet placed at the "new" end, it looks like a decent set-up and will have stiff flexion for good hooksets. There's not much sensitivity to the end now that the original tip's off, but for pike, you're not exactly needing to feel for subtle hits.

Just wondering if anyone's ever bothered. I can be frugal, and don't like to toss things out -- but I also don't see the point in accumulating useless junk.

Rod repair

Post by Seaweed »

Hi Wolfe and clan

Rod breakage is kind of commonplace... so don't feel bad.

I repair mine all the time... you can buy rod tip repair kits.

Check out this link for an idea of what you are looking for.

Buy the kit the "weed" mentioned, fix-er up! I still use a couple of "broken tip" rods, I actually like one of them better after I broke it.

Ohhh yes....
Managed to close the door on the rod tips.... yes... rod tipS... as in plural.

glued on a new tip eyelet.... only lost a few inches.

By bro managed to snap one of my rods horsing the ATV thgough a rough spot and it broke near the handle.... without a replacement I had to wrap it in fiberglass and patch it.... very, very ugly, but it did the job for the trip.

Most rods can be repaired, but the reason you bought the rod(action) is gone forever.

Thx for your feedback.

This was originally a rod that you might use to combat something from the toothy esox clan. Would you trust it to handle them again with a repaired tip? Right now in its broken state, it's obviously shorter, but in one-piece construction. If it's repaired to restore its original length, would the site where it was re-joined be strong enough to handle a nut job toothy critter?

Has anyone used their repaired rods for larger fish?

Wolfe I am not sure that you could repair a rod to it's original length. Add a tip to make it shorter is possible and it'll just stiffen the rod and you will have to readjust drag cause you will lose the flexibility needed to horse one in.

I keep them for use as guest rods at the cottage. We have had at least two tips broken off when a rookie kept reeling in even though the lure or snap swivel had already reached the tip.

I guess I should mention, this rod must have had more than a few inches broken off. It is only about 5' long now. It would make a good whipping stick.

Some folks intentionally fish with rods that have all the action of a pool cue...........

But as wallyboss mentioned, that might not be the best bet.........just because something CAN be done doesn't mean it SHOULD be done!

I agree, Doug (and how the heck ARE you, Doug?!) ...

Like SixStringHack mentioned: I think this rod is going to be kept as a spare for visiting kids -- or "desperate emergencies". I still say it wouldn't be a bad rod for one of the kids to use for pike.

Farlane, sounds like we have 2 bum EXOS rods. I don't even know where this one came from. We often end up with reject poles from my brothers arsenal and have others that are quite old.

Wolfe,
I have fixed a few rods myself with a bolt ( the head cut off and the
threaded shaft, the same diameter as rod internal diameter) epoxied into
rod halfs, then wrap thread around outer rod. Then coat of epoxy over threads.See rod-wrapping site to learn how to do this.
