Labour day fishing and a new personal best

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Labour day fishing and a new personal best

Post by Trophymuskie »

I have been hard at work guiding 11 days in the last 2 weeks so I took yesterday off to stay around the house.

But you know an addict just can't be that close to his obsession without wanting to walk the 150' to go fish. So I had planned to go fish today but when I got up and it was super cold and the river was flat I decided to stay home and take care of a couple of things on the honey do list.

Even before lunchtime I felt the fish calling me and when I picked up my watch I saw the 4 fish and said man I should be out there NOW. My wife and son had plans for the afternoon so I asked my daughter to join me for a fish after lunch. She said sure as she had not fished for muskie yet this year.

I saw clouds coming over the horizon so I said time to go fish lets go. By the time we get to start trolling it already was raining so we put the top up. Now the weather network predicted 40% chance of rain for a total of 1mm damn if we didn't get 1 mm for every 1/2 hour we were out there from 2 to 5 pm.

I am saddened to say I lost my new favourite bait, yah the one that caught that monster and missed a couple more 6 days prior. Don't know why but it just wasn't there when I checked for weeds. I guess I didn't check my line well enough when we set out our lures.

So we trolled some more of my backyard for like 1.5 hours before her rod went off like a big girl was knocking. Once again we were heading into a decent wind so I had to make sure to turn the boat as she battled the beast. Thank god that fish fought hard as it helped our cause. Now dad managed to mess up the netting job so we have this great big fish almost half way into the net but can’t get it to fall in so I tell her to drop the rod and grab the net while I grabbed the fish and literally flipped it into the net.

As I tried to remove the one hook out of the corner of her mouth she thrashed and I ended up with the welded 1/3 hook in my pliers and the fish at the bottom of the net.

Hard to believe this big fish only measured in at 51 inches but this one was fat and her new personal best. Not bad for her first time muskie fishing in 2010. She did get a couple of 4 footers back in her two trips in 2009.

Do notice the two hand release. ;)
