Saturday speckles at the cottage

Spent Friday night at the cottage and got up there later than planned after a few quick stops. Conditions on the road made for a miserable drive although there was a promising sky in the distance. Anthony and I went up for one reason this weekend - to fish. The plans were made a few weeks back to get out and fish trout around there for the weekend following opener..right around the same time the crappies were filling pails. We were up for the later hours of the night rigging up rods and making lunch..

River was high, our fire pit-submerged.

After a couple beers and the alarm set for 5 we decided to call it a night..I had trouble sleeping(Brookie fever) and watched CSI for an hour before taking my short nap.

We arrived to the lake with almost perfect conditions weather wise. Started our paddle around the lake at 6:00am and on the first drift Anthony breaks the ice with a nice spec to start the day. I casted to the same spot twice before with a worm and no luck. They wanted something moving.

Not too long after he follows up with another trout. Were only 20 minutes into the morning and already he's into a few fish. The days outlook is looking good meanwhile I am still stinking here. It's early.

On our first round around the lake we noticed a shoreline that was fairly deeper than the other areas we had fished. The plan was to make a few drifts and work the structure slowly and then make our way over to a small island on the other side of the lake. The sun was hitting for some time and looked perfect to warm up the hands and have a breakfast. It was a good thing we did! Picked up my first fish of the morning along with a couple more fish and they were getting bigger. We decided to string 4 fish to bring home and it's only 8:30 :)

Finishing up a couple snacks we fentured off and checked out a few new spots. The wind picked up to the point where paddling was getting rough. Having no means of power made it tough to manouver the boat in the way we needed it to. Anthony wanted to check out a sheltered spot to shore fish for a while which was a good idea until the winds calmed down. We bunkered down on a small rock shoreline that was castable and looked really fishy. Immediatly Anthony hooks into fish...a short time after I get one too. Wow, this is awesome. Having already strung our keep we tossed back the rest of the fish unharmed. He missed a BIG trout...I will let him tell the story.

Anthony and I made another tour of the lake. Caught two more fish and missed two more. Packed everything in at 12 and made our way back to the cottage for lunch.

We will be right back at it next weekend in our spare time getting the boats ready for walleye and pike opener. I plan on spending a full day though :D

Tight lines
