report - Fishing in Rockland Saturday afternoon

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

report - Fishing in Rockland Saturday afternoon

Post by Yannick Loranger »

I'll be fishing for eyes in Rockland one last time tomorrow afternoon at the spot locally known as Pago (mouth of Clarence Creek). Anyone interested can join me on the ice or PM me if you need to know how to get there. Tight lines everyone. Enjoy what could be the last weekend of the ice season.

What time will you be out there at? This seems interesting to me. Haven't caught too much through the ice let alone a walleye.

I should be there by 3:00. BYO bait. I'll have holes and tackle if you need it.

We went looking for quality but ended up finding quantity. After getting a 5lbs + walleye and a few nice 14-15" eaters earlier this week we were hoping the big eyes were starting to move towards spawning grounds. Unfortunately the big eyes were nowhere to be found although we did find alot of fish. We ended getting 14 walleye/sauger that were at best barely keepers. We threw them all back. As night fell Shane get a big tug on his jigging rod, sets the hook into something big but loses it a 20 seconds into the fight. Bummer. I walk back to my jigging rod, look back and see his still line bent over. He sets to the hook and 15 minutes later, we have a 12-15 lbs sturgeon on the ice. By this time it's totally dark and time to head home. So the tally for the day, 14 of the dore variety and a dinosaur.

Had a pic of the sturgeon up, but took it down after reviewing the FH policy. Fine by me.

one of 14 walleye/sauger. About the average size of what we caught. But all the same, catching numbers of fish is fun too

On a side note, has it ever happened to anyone that one set-up just will not have any action. My favorite jigging rod hasn't had a bite for 3 outings in a row now. I put the same jig on another rod and had a fish on within 5 minutes and ended up getting half a dozen or so. Line has picked up a sent?? reel oil on the line?? I'm stumped, any ideas?

Well, I'm done for the season, I'll post again some time in April once I get the boat running.

Tight lines,

Nice report Fisherguy33. I sure hope you released that 5+lber, because there is a size limit on walleye this time of year on the Ottawa River.
Ont Reg state: must be less than 40 cm
(15.8 in.) from Mar. 1 - June 15.

Cheers, Frank

Great report !! The sturgeon is really impressive, must have been a decent fight on a small ice rod.

Regarding your rod that won't get a fish - if the line is the same as your other rods, then it is just coincidence. I would suspect the line is too visible...

Thanks for the replies everyone. We did release that 5lber. We havn't kept anything for about a month now except for anything we'll eat that night or any fish badly hooked. That sturgeon was alot of fun and looked like it still had lots of pep when we put it back.
Walleye is open here until the 31st, but there's open water on the qc side of the river and it looks like it's creeping south so we're unfortunately done for the season. That sturgeon was the 2nd one we've gotten this week, I got a 5lber Tuesday.
The mods will be happy with the 2nd photo...not much I can do about the sturgeon, hope everyone get a good look ;)
Tight lines,
Yannick
