I am planning on doing a lot of "underwater hunting" this summer on my side of the river of course, and am wondering what the majority of people think about spear fishing??

As long as you stay within the law.........

I'd love to see photo's on here of spear fishing.

Skubasteve,

Keep in mind that spear guns are illegal to use in Ontario, and even with traditional spears, you can only fish for carp and white suckers.

I think his side of the river is likely the QC side

I think it would be pretty intense and didn't know you could actually go underwater and spear a fish. I bet it would be interesting for sure!

I can probably guess what most peoples oppinion is regarding spearing, but if it's legal, and you have the means, go for it! I probably would!

Yes I am definitly on the QC side, and always obey fishing and hunting regs.

The reason I posted this is I was just talking with a couple of guys at LeBarons yesturday and the one guy was litterally freaking out on me, I personally thaught this was hilarious because when I asked him if he hunted, he said of course!!!

Soooo, I asked him what the difference was between hunting a deer with a high powered rifle with a scope on it or hunting a fish with a spear gun that you have to actually get close to!! He said there was a big difference but he could not tell me what the difference was, he was kind of a bonehead, hope it was no one on here and if he is on here LIGHTEN UP DUDE!!!

Hi skubasteve :P ,

I don't care for the sport, especially if the fish is not to be consumed. In all honesty, I'd prefer to not see the pictures in the fishing forum, but in the hunting forum.

Be safe when you try it out. You'll probably see some really cool stuff under water.

I think it would be really cool to spear fish while underwater, while staying within unwritten conservation rules. Obviously no C&R in that sport...

As a kid, we used to spear carp in the creek with our own home-made spears. Lots of fun playing "cave-man" :D . The water refraction was a big factor in hitting the target. If you are also underwater, refraction wouldn't be a consideration I suppose...

Have fun and post the pics - in the hunting forum as Wolfe suggested. I'll be one to enjoy seeing the results.

Watch out for Kayaks and trolling lines. Bring sidecutters strapped to your leg - would be unpleasant to get tangled in some 1960's copper line without cutters...

hey bradford.

come wit me this summer a bit off kayaking and spearfishing..you will love it.

spearfishing is a lot off fun.

its hunting more then fishing actualy.

usely done in freedive.(no tank etc)..so you are going down in water witout any equipement..just mask/fins/speargun or pole spear..and you hunt .

its a fascinating sport..i have been doing it for the past 30 years...but i put it on hold for the past 4 or 5 years..but this year i will be doing it a lot more.

looking at videos or pictures off spearfishing can be a bit hard ..not for all.

some people dont think its ok or wathever...i tell you its not that easy..try to go under water frome 1 feet to 100 feet like some people i no and wait and dont move and shoot then go back up..its a great sport.

like wolfe said it could be more in the hunting section or it section by itself..but not anaugh people doing it to have there own section.

spearfishing is fun but as it danger..there some people that get spear by there own gun or somebody hesle guns every year.

so safety is number one...and not going hunting as a group is the best...2 people..no more..or you do it in deferent area.

if any off you want to come try it no prob..got a couple speargun or spear here.

will do some spear/kayak hunting this year.

I was re reading that respons frome that guy you got scuba steave...actualy a lot off people think that way.

that it is not ok..or that the fish dont have a chance and so on.

its the exact same thing as hunting or wathever.

there is a lot that goes into spearfishing.

sit in a stand ..comfy on a piece off foam sleeping hahahaand wait for a deer to come out at the end off the field..wow,,its fun and done it..but it aint better.

its plain hunting..plus you have to be close..like under 6 feet for a pole spear and no more then 10 feet for most spearguns.mabe a bit more for those monster speargun in the oceans.

i would compare it to bowhunting..but not regular bow but..longbow or recurve..i use and still use my longbow,,its a old way off doing it...same a lot off people dont like bow,,saying it hurt more then kill a deer...ho well..if you smart about it..nope..like in all things.

you have to pratice on underwater board and get use to it..like everything hesle.

there some underwater target competition for that sport to.

some actualy play underwater hockey as is training for spearfishing to get in that great shape to stay longer under water and get down to 100 feet deap on the stlawrence to get is monster walleyes.

or do trapping..for fure.

i do all kind off fishing frome fly fishing to spearfishing.

i dont kill for fun....plus i love to be under the water and just look around more then anything helse..cool to see all what under that surface.

i no people that fish under water..trut.

people using fishing pole under the water..its legal to do so anywhere..and you can see what lures is working or not the action.,,just swim backward and look at your lures swiming and see the fish hit it. or not...or some just jigs in deaper water(clear) and see everything.

its not psearfishing..its actualy fishing..so you can do it anywhere.

this is what i want to try somewhere in ontario for one species.in real clear water. 8) .and film it.

people should try before slaming it.

i see a lot worst..people shoting bow at carp..for the fun off it..kill carp for fun..wow  and its legal in ontario we see it every year in longsault. :x .....you cant use 2 rod to fish carp frome the bank but you can kill them by truck load wit a bow..go figure.

and in quebec its not all species that you can spear..sturgeons/musky/salmon/lakers are not legal..and its ok.

its a great sport.

montreal region is one off the best place to do so.

and we have some extra clear lakes here to do so to.

As long as you don't shoot anything other than carp and suckers rock on man. If your looking for a good use for the snipe of the day, they make excellent natural fertilizer. Bury them in the garden.

Joco did you say it was legal to spearfish walleye in the St.Lawrence?
I also agree with you about the bowfishing in the st.lawrence for the carp it's brutal. I see it every year. Theres a certain creek in a certain campsite on the #2 highway that is no wider than 2 boats and is loaded with carp in the spring, and every year a couple boats go down the creek and shoot at least 75% of the carp. A couple times they even did it when we were fishing. And for what? If you want target practice go shoot at a target or something
