Spent all last week at Melody Lodge on Cranberry Lake. Went up early this year to try our hands at some spring time Pike. Not so good. Everyone was telling us that the weather is about 2 weeks ahead of schedule and the Pike had already moved to deeper water. All togeather we caught 20 between 3 people. Did have alot of other critters hit. Biggest Perch I've seen in years up there., Going back up 1st week of bass fishing, should be a great year for them, While fishing fo Crappie, we were catching the occasional two or three pounder. Know they[re not in season yet, but when your throw'n a 1\16 th ounce jig on an ultralite, what can ya do? Crappie were excellent also. quiet a few 13" slabs. Fished this lake for years and never new they were in there, but was always there in bass season and never targeted them.
Any tips for Pike in the first week of bass season? Takeing my buddy up for his first fishin trip to your great country, and would love to give him the best chance at catch'n one.

I would fan cast large weedbed flats with large spinner baits. Cranberry is quite shallow, so also check out Dog and Cranesnest. Look for a weed line that drops off into deeper water (20'-30'). These areas will hold larger Pike as compared to large weedbed flats.

Just got back from a short trip to Gananoque Lake, and I have to say I agree with your findings. Crappie were numerous, large and lots of fun. Pike were few and far between, and those caught were in deeper water. By the time we caught on to this, it was time to leave. Weather was wretched, as well, with lots of rain and cooler temps. That was following a summer-like trend, so perhaps the sudden cool down sent the pike packing for deeper, more temperate waters. For whatever reason, we had a fishing experience much like yours: lots of nice crappie & panfish, a couple of "oops" bass and only a few pike.

Hey there. There were no puny ones, for sure. They were all nice, with a few whoppas in there. Lots and lots of fun, as it had been some time since we fished for them. We found them off a scrap of an island (Little Coon) on Gananoque 2 days in a row. Filled in the time nicely, as the pike were avoiding our plays at them. I have a couple of nice pic's; will try my best to get them posted tonight. Stay tuned....

How was your weekend. Weather kind of put a damper on things, no pun intended, but we made the best of it!
