Whitefish Trip

Post by Buckshot »

Got out this afternoon for a fish.

Managed to catch 8 whitefish, 2 lake herring, a couple of perch and a few smelt.

Fished 52 ft of water and used a buckshot and crippled herring, caught fish suspended 4 ft off bottom.

Kept 4 whitefish for a snack and let the rest go.

here are a few photos.

If you havent seen the difference between whitefish and lake herring the photos above show it good. The whitefish mouth is underneath while the lake herring mouth opens more like a tarpon mouth.

A few whitefish to take home

I really enjoy eating them, they are excellent grilled or broiled. The flesh is a bit heavier than a walleye but you fillet them the same, I will also smoke a few and they make a nice snack when you are out fishing.

But my favorite is using them in a chowder, nothing beats whitefish chowder, (bacon, potato, milk, corn, butter mmm good).

As for the location it is porbably a bit further than most of you are willing to drive. If it was my spot i would have no problem telling where it is, but it is a friends that showed me the lake and spot and he did it in confidentiality.

If anyone has questions on technique or anything like that by all means ask away.

Well I like the idea of smoker... I am thinking of buying one to do some eye's and bass in. I had some artic char and I must confess it was fantastic. A food friend of mine is an outfitter in the North and when he visits he brings some down.. What a treat.

Fair enough on location, Buckshot, that is a reasonable thing to keep secret! I thought it might have been one of the well-known lakes, just wondered which one.

I agree that whities are delicious smoked. I usually smoke them, then can them, and the flavour goes through every molecule of the meat!

They are also good on the BBQ, done as a fillet, skin side down. :D

since i discovered that the lake where i spend my summers has a strong population of these I would'nt mind a few hints on tackle for those either through a pm or here for the masses to read :D

By the way since some of you like smoked fish, there is a store in Westport across from the foodliner that is awesome for smoked fish of all kinds. If you don't smoke your own. :D

Thanks
