Réservoir Baskatong at Windigo/UPDATE

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Réservoir Baskatong at Windigo/UPDATE

Post by farmerkid »

Hey guys,
Next week i'm leaving for 3 days at the baskatong reservoir up near maniwaki and i'll be staying at le village Windigo which is in windigo bay.

I've been there last year but the closest i got to catching a fish was missing the same pike 3 times in a row :x .

Now that reservoir is known for its walleye and thats what i will try getting, aldo if u know that the area is good for other fish, or that you know of a good way to target a fish species there be free to say so.

I'll be fishing mostly in a canoe and off the dock in the bay and i'll try at the mouth of the bay if the big water is relatavly calm (which did not happen last time  )

Now what tactic should i be using to target those fish? i'm thinking the best choice would be to verticale jig with some gulp minnows (i dont use live bait), and secondly to troll rapalas and crankbaits. Anything else?

Help is greatly appreciated
Nick

UPDATE:

Well got back a few hours ago and let me tell you, THE FISHIN WAS SLOW. A perch and a small pike to show for my efforts. tried jiggin for walleye and throwing plugs, nothing. Still a beautiful place though. I'm sure i'll catch some decent fish there one day

I think you should get a handle on the fish with a big dewie first.

Then if you want to test your jigging skills, or by the sounds of it perhaps develop them, then I'd move to the plastic jigs.

HEY farmerDUDE!

iv been there 3 times and here is what iv learnt...

that body of water is HARD to fish man ... for walleye i mean...

the only way i was getting decent size ones were in 8 - 12 FOW

on a weed LINE trolling with a small broken in two rapalas ...

jigging with leeches was working too... but oyu dont use live so that piece of info is useless! 8)

Also people jigging with single tailed MR.twisters with a piece 'O' worm

were getting some over the 12 inch line!

hope this helps

Do gulp leeches count  ? cause i have some of those! :o :D

thanks 24/7, i'll look for some weed lines and i'll try throwing out a small rapala.

To bad the camp is on the eastern side of the reservoir, which is basically pretty much open water water, i'd except much better fishing (espacially for pike which i love) in the western side where theres all the islands.

Oh well, beets staying home!

That my friend, is completely not true...I had three buddies make it out there this spring(I was suppose to be the fourth member of the group but I ended up trout fishing that weekend) and did very well. Not being the hardcore type fisherman they still caught plenty of walleyes. Not one fish on live bait  In the SPRING to boot. From the photo's you could tell the biggest fish was around 3-4lbs with many averaging in the 2-3lbs size. All caught on Rapala shad raps, husky jerks and bombers flatlining behind the boat. Won't be missing the next tirp out. Fish'em shallow...Lots of sand out there work with   It was kind of cool knowing all fish they had caught ever the three days were with what I had told them to use...

I have to agree with Tip-up. No shortage of fish there.

During the spring we took daily limits out of there. Big Dewie on an 8-0 hook was the go-to bait.

I'll have to try the broken in two rapala in the future.

hey guys thanks for the tips!

and 24/7 thats a huge pike    sure wish i could get one like that over there!

But heres the probleme, i'm fishing here

Image

which is basically this small little bay in the middle of nowhere right by the open lake. Dosent look like good pike habitat :? , almost no weeds there.

I'd rather be fishing here!

Image

Looks much better for fishing!

But hey, i got to do with what i got! Maybe there will be a nice pike in the deeper water hunting some walleye! I got a new williams whitefish i've been dying to try out for some big pike!

Anyway thanks guys for the replys, i'll be sure to post a report when i come back! that is IF i catch any fish :?
