Ottawa River - Rockland

Hi Folks,

Went out for about 1.5 hours this evening. I wanted to check out the back bay directly across from the Rockland launch. I could see fish stirring the water near the weed, and was fishing top water frogs to no avail. I switched to a white spinner with a red twister tail, and got a good hit on one of my first casts (about 2.5 feet of water). After a really good fight, I pulled in this:

After reading a post the other day about the difference between pike and muskie, I realized that this was my first muskie ever! I counted nine holes on the top of his snout, whereas pike only have six...

All in all it was a memorable trip.

Cheers,

Chris

nice pike!!! it aint a muskie but nice pike for sure.

and the holes you should be looking for are on the bottom of the mouth. flip it's head upside and then you'll see them.

nice pike though

here's a little info for you on pike vs muskie identification problems!

you'll find the hole problem you were having in the bottom left corner of the picture.

just click on picture, those pores or "holes" are not on the top, you should be looking of the bottom of the jaw.

and yeah just by the colors.

I stand corrected (multiple times) :D I guess I misunderstood the "more than 6 holes" thing.

It sure was a fun fish to fight though. Thanks for the clarification

One more thing, just in case. The pores are at the OUTSIDE of the lower jaw. Don't look for them inside the fish's mouth. We don't want anyone to get bitten by those teeth :)

Maybe stating the obvious, but just in case as I said.

I've never had success in this end of the woods. I will usually catch a couple of pike or bass, but nothing real big or in real n umbers. I am planning on heading out towards Rockland or even Wendover tomorrow morning to see if I have any more luck. I will report back.

The thing that I hate about the Ottawa River is thatit is so dirty and cloudy, that you can't see structure, or even any fish despite using polarized sunglasses. I much prefer fishing smaller alkes with clear waters that enable more sight fishing despite having a sonar.

As soon as that rain stops for a couple of days the Ottawa will clear up. If you don't like cloudy water just stay west of Wendover after a big rain, cause that Nation river is a muddy one.
