I was thinking of going to BOQ this year for my first time !

Without giving away your tips or trick
any Idea of
where to start ?
Stay overnight ?
when to fish (Mid october and on ?)
and what to look out for as it seems the waters get pretty rough !!

I am used to lake ontario if that helps !?!?!

Well, enough with the PMing....I've only been out there a few times but here is what I can gather, grab soem 8-10' long downrigging rods, line counter reels, throw on a bunch of 20lb powerpro, or something like that, a 20' flouro leader, tie on a reef runner, manns 20+, or yo-zuri crystal minnow, in purple, pink, white, polka dot, anything. Let out 150' of line, clamp on your off shore planer board and let out another 100'.

I think anywhere between the gap at the BOQ and where the ferry crosses. Close to shore, in the middle, wherever, just troll around 1mph or so and watch for baitfish on your sonar. If you do this anytime from mid-october until freeze up you'll have pretty good odds.

Hit up Bits and Baits for lures, rods, whatever...a really good stock right now.

If I'm leavign somethign out or have something wrong feel free to correct. There's a lot of fish out there and a ton of water so no need for that many secrets.

I thought we're here to try and help everyone get better and catch more fish.

How do you know that maybe one of us was wasn't pm'g him to offer a place to stay overnight and didn't want the whole freakin world to see that???

How nice would it be if all these different replies were available for all of us to see and compare and discuss...Isn't that why we are all here.

For things like a place to stay and whatnot, yeah PM but for the "how to.." which is what he was looking for, to compare notes, ideas and strategies would be nice if we could all see what we were thinking so we could all gain from it.

I think most people would agree with me on that.

I was actually looking forwards to reading the responses on this one. I haven't been on the BOQ for...... too long. I used to fish out of Napanee in the spring a few times each year. I have never fished there in the fall and was seriously considering a day trip this month to try and catch one of those big fall walleye. I was looking for a time frame and general area to start, and some fishing tactics to get me started. I have downriggers but no planer boards and no real plans on getting any.

I understand Cast-A-Way asked a lot of questions, all of them good ones to my estimation. There is nothing wrong in sending someone a PM and going the extra mile fore someone, especially for someone that isn't from the area. But I'm with MuskieWannabe on the "share the information" concept.

By no means am I anything close to an expert, I've read most of the articles that Sheldon has done on the subject and have fished with him once, and as he is probably one of ther best BOQ fisherman I've seen I've tried to take what he says as the best way of doing things. From what I can gather, to really increase your odds dramatically, planer boards are a necessity, that's not to say that flat lining won't work either. And in the fall, people, in my experience, tend to stay away from downriggers because of gthe higher mortality rate. Pulling those big girls from down deep can send their bladders fro a wirl and be their demise. A lot of these big girls are no more than 20-30' deep.

I'll be tryign everything out there this fall, starting in a few shorts weeks...hell I'm even going to run one of my muskie baots off a muskie rod! I did catch a 26" pickerel off it this year and with 4 rods with planer boards I figure it'd be a lot easier than trying a flat line with a walleye crank!

As for Speed, Since I fish for salmon and trout mostly at higher speeds you say about 1MPH is the way to go ??
I can get as low as about 1.8-1.4 on the GPS with my boat, so do you think a drift sock would help or "backtrolling" ??

I will give out one major tip about suspended walleye on Quinte and the Great Lakes, the most active feeding fish will be close to the surface. Last fall on Quinte I never ran a bait deeper than 20 feet from the surface. Some of the best days (over 40 walleye in an afternoon) the baits where only 5 to 10 feet down. Note, You will not see these fish on your sonar as they move out and away from the boat.

I do not use down riggers for walleye fishing for a number of reasons as dipsy, jet divers, snap-weights and lead-core can get any bait into the walleye feeding zone with out all the extra hardware and weight attached to my boat.

By mid October the bait and walleye will start to arrive from the Lake and by November a majority will be in.

Go catch a fish of a life time...

If the water temps are in the 60's you will be fine moving cranks at 1.4 to 1.8 mph. As the water cools you will need to slow down. Also watch the baits at the side of the boat before letting them out to determine the best action. Keep changing speeds until you find a pattern. I like to think of it as 'let the walleye tell you what they want'.

Cast-a-way, we will be heading to BOQ Oct.20 and 21. If you can book a day with Eye-Tracker you will not be disappointed, you will learn a tonne in a short time and more than likely catch a monster eye! Let me tell ya the first time you catch one of these and the first glimpse of it , your heart will start racing and you wont believe your EYES! Good luck and if you happen to be there when we go say hello. We will be going down several times this season, weather permitting of course.

Hey Badger, we'll be heading down there that weekend also, as well as the next weekend and hopefully one or two more times in November.
