Does line color make a difference ?

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Does line color make a difference ?

Post by xcal »

I have a couple of reels that I am going to respool. I have 2 large spools of Trilene XT. One is clear and one is green. Under what conditions should I each color and which one would be better in Lake Ontario for use with downriggers and planer boards?

Xcal,

I personally prefer clear line when it comes to this type of line, dark line would be my second choice. Depending on the type of fish you are targeting, I find some to be "smarter" than others so to speak. For smallies, if I can make the line disappear as much as possible, I find I have better success.

Now I'm still trying to figure out yellow fireline. It's one of the mysteries I have yet to uncover.

Seems to me the only thing a coloured line would do is let the angler see the line better. In a case like this, I'd always tie on at least a 3 or 4 ft leader of fluorocarbon

Actually, tests have shown that an olive green line is less visible in clear water than clear line, which is actually white. Apparantley it has something to do with matching the algae that is present even in crystal clear water.
