kayak/canoe fishing info

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

I find fishing from a canoe uncomfortable (though I've been in rented canoes). The main thing, I think, is that you need an anchor of some kind, otherwise you never stay in the same place long enough to cast a second time.

I must confess to looking at kayaks on-line and at the new Le Baron. :D

An anchor can be dangerous in a kayak, especially in moving water. I would never use one. That doesn't leave you helpless and drifting, though. You can partly ground yourself on a flat rock or log, catch an eddy that lets you circle over a spot, or even back into the weeds along the shore, which usually gives you enough friction to resist the current.

Canoe and Kayak fishing.

Post by Joey Rat »

I have a 16' Kipawa that runs about 45 lbs. Great tripping canoe but not much of a fishing platform. It doesn't help that my centre of gravity runs a little high

I have seen detachable pontoons for canoes on some websites but have never seen one in a store. They look like they'd be just the thing to stabilize things for casting and retrieving fish.

Anyone have any experience with this sort of thing or know anywhere in the Ottawa area where I might have a close up look at one of these devices.

I've also thought about lowering the seats to improve the overall centre of gravity but its hard to know how much impact that might have.

Thanks.

Joco,

Sorry.. which magazine has the canoe/kayak fishing special edition? I have been decking out my canoe to fish and I'm always looking for some fresh ideas. Thanks!

I got one of those wide width canoe meant for wildlife photography (Scott Drifter). So far, it is stable enough to stand on without stabilizer as long as there are no inconsiderate boaters around.

Cat fish felt a lot bigger when reeling in from a canoe. I caught a medium size one on the Ottawa River and I thought it was going to be my first musky. Maybe I should target cat fish once I get my first walleye from the canoe.

Hey noodle,

So you like the Drifter!

Do you paddle it or row it, great looking real wide canoe.

I have been looking for a canoe to fish from and would love to know how much it is worth and if you got it in Ottawa?

Thanks.
Well and truly hooked!

Canoe and kayak fishing

Post by Joey Rat »

Joco, that's it exactly. Cabela's has them as well. I don't even mind the price, I'm just a little leary about ordering from an American web site in case I need to return it.

Time to talk to some of the canoe & outdoor companies to see if they can bring them in or even special order them.

Hey .. noodles .

Joco ..
my buddy, who owns a real old sportspal had to rebuild his "spontoons" (the stablizers on the outside of the canoe) and all he did was McGiver a couple of pool noodles to refit onto the side of his canoe.
hope this helps ..

Iceman....
Actually I use an electric trolling motor because I'm a weak paddler. More time fishing, less time paddling. It is especially useful since I do a lot of solo and the drifter is not a solo canoe. I chose this instead of a square end because I occasionally go interior camping where motors are not allowed.

I got it last year for ~$1000. Any local Scott canoe dealer would carry them or order one in.

Joco....
Thanks for the info. I will stop by Chapter tomorrow.

So far, I don't have anything worthwhile to report. Although last week at Charleston L, I caught a mid size LM and he spat out a baby catfish that was still alive. Guess he liked my plastic grub more than catfish.

Going canoe camping in 2 weeks so if the fishing is good, I'll post a report!

Fishing from a kayak is a blast! Unfortunately, I haven't caught anything worth mentioning out of mine yet (hence no reports) :( But rigging the kayak is half the fun. It will have to do until I get a real boat :) Here is a pic of mine from Sunday at Constance Bay, all set to hit the water:

First pic posted ever so bear with me :)
