Hey RRC,
Here is my advice - get a Bass Pro Shops Enticer reel. Well under $100, 10 ball bearing, smooth as silk and perfect anti-reverse. They are on sale on the basspro.com website for $39 U.S., and can be had at the Toronto store for around $60 or so. I picked up 2 last year, and was extremely impressed with the quality and smoothness. (I've used a lot of expensive spinning reels in the past, and these were of equal comparison..)
I'll be switching all my spinning reels over this coming season to the Enticer. For the money, and the high-quality, you just can't beat it...Let a few friends try them out this past year, and they couldn't believe how great the reel was for the price I paid...
Something to consider...

I bought an Okuma Inspire last summer and I love it , I also have a PFluegger Trion I love it but I was told that if it breaks down not to even try to get service from the company.
The okuma the more I fish with it the smoother it gets.

I really like the Abu Garcia Cardinal series. Drag is nice and smooth, instant-anti-reverse, and a good price.
I've got 2 from the 100 series, and love them both.

I would suggest looking at the Shimano Symetre, or the Sedona. These are excellent reels that will last a long time. My personal preference is the Shimano Stradic but they are more than $100. These reels are smooth, come with anti-rust bearings, awesome drags, great gear ratio, extra spool, clean line retrieve and excellent castability. I cannot say enough about their products. I have put there gear through there paces either tournament fishing or guiding and they always stand up and perform excellent. When your purchasing a reel or rod it is an investment and also an important item to enjoy your time out on the water and make it successful. Good Luck.
Cheers

Shimano Sahara or if you can find the older diawa regal X 2500. Both are quality reels.

I suggest the Symetre reel from shimano. I have 5 Sedona's and 2 symetre's and they all work well but the Sedona's aren't built for extreme duty. If you plan on using it more than say 20 times a year it is alright but it does get tired after a while. The symetre's I have are 2 years old with ton's of hours on them and they still work like the day I bought them. The Sahara is also nice but I don't have any first hand experience with them.

Personally I love my Quantum Catalist PTi. Its an amazing reel, and I got it at Lebaron's last year for $79.99.
I think too may people overlook Quantum gear. In the USA its very popular, and I have never had 1 problem with any of their gear. Abu however I'm not a huge fan of it, seen too many problems with friends gear.
I look at it this way... Shimano is Lexus and Quatum is Toyota. Both great, but Quantum gets you great value for the money, Shimano gets you all the expensive bells and whistles.

No better reel then that of shimano!
Sahara or symetre would be your best bet and if your willing to chip in a bit more go with the Stradic comes with braid guard and oil ports.

i treat my equipment very hard, and the toughest spinning reels for the money are the daiwa's.
but shimano's will treat you the best, if you take care of it.
