Ice access

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Ice access

Post by Seaweed »

I was down to Petrie today for a little look see to check up on the ice conditions.

Crappie bay is totally iced in... thickness unknown. No apparent access for vehicles though since they put up all the parking barriers.

I also noticed that the access road onto Walleye bay has had the concrete blocks pulled away to allow for traffic. There is no ice on Walleye bay yet though. Baitshop bay is rumoured to have three inches.

An interesting addition now at the culverts is a floating cottage that has For Rent signage on it. Looks like a three bedroom with a nice porch and patio setup with BBQ and Patio set. There is electrical hook up as well. Apparently this used to be over in Masson, Quebec and the owner has moved it over to the Ontario side. $1700 a month facing the culverts to allow year round fishing.

Seaweed, I'm thinking Crappie Bay has just as much ice as Bait Shop Bay, I'm hazarding a guess of 3" now. Providing we maintain these double digit overnighters, it should be good to go by the weekend for those of us with balls that clank. I'll wear the floater suit and bring rope to be on the safe side.

Here's what it looks like:

YEah, that cottage is not in a very good spot, looks like it would be hit by vandals if not occupied regularly. $250 a night year round is a good price if you want to have a little ice fishing/poker party with 10 or so people. I believe SeaBass told me it was a three bedroom cottage, even has/had a seadoo mounted on the back. I presume they're gonna moor this thing out off shore during the summer months though. Would be noisy and have pretty crappy fishing right where it is.

That's exactly where i cast out for catfish. And I know that nobody will rent it during Catfish season especially with the wind in the right direction and HOF is there with a white bucket. and a mask on.
When hell freezes over, I'll be there icefishing!!!

It will bring tears to your eyes and you stomach to your throat   Besides, I'm just trying to get everybody in that area used to a stinch in the air, for not long after is the "POOPCYCLE" thaw :)

Before they put in the new parking we use to drive down and on the ice into crappie bay, now we have to take the long way around(across from the bait store), there are two steel poles that look like they can be removed, its to bad that they ?? don't do this for the ice fishing season. Has anyone heard if they are going to plow the parking in front of crappie bay this winter, we had a heck of a time last year trying to get in and out of there last winter.maybe the guys at the bait store could pull a few strings and get those steel poles removed for the winter.

You know you have a fishing problem when you look at leaving for Puerto Vallarta on the weekend as a pain because you're going to miss first ice.

Be careful out there lads.

City property my friend, bait guys have no say!
Good luck dealing with the City they are all overworked and under paid.
I checked the poles out last year and then they appeared to be removable only a small lock at the base, if we only had a key.

I'm surprised people even feel the need to drive out onto Crappie Bay. Parking in the lot out in front, it's all of a 5 minute walk max. to get out fishing. That's one of the shortest and easiest walks I've done around here to get out fishing. Besides, pulling a portable a few hundred yards is a pretty good workout for you..
Fished beside one guy that drove on from down at the Baitshop last year. As he came down the slight hill and onto the ice....POP....yep, ended up with a burst front tire. As I tended to my tipups, I got to watch him change a tire in -15 degree weather! Not fun...
Good Fishing,
Justin
