i dont go on it until there is at least 4 inches of nice hard ice. AS for my vehicle I wait until there is at least 16 inches and make sure others cars have been out.

I was out on 3 inches last year, but I think from now on I'll wait for 4 inches before venturing out there.

? and if he's wet i guess you can assume it's less then 4 inches ...
