That would likely depend on how fast you are going.
Do you have an anticipated trolling speed?

I know 10 colors will get you down about 50' at 2.4 mph.

Bang on MT.

At normal trolling speeds, you can estimate 5 feet down for each color.

....but it's good advice.

MT, I was half a step away of trying the SWB last night. Maybe next time.

chubb, let me know if you need any more help with lead core. Skeinmachine and King Me helped me out a lot this spring getting my core set up rigged and it's one of my favorite rods in my spread now.

Make sure you get a good length of fluro in front of it and let me know if you need directions for a knot to splice in the core. Skein showed me the Willis Knot and it's simple and easy.

Thanks for the imfo guys

I'm pretty new to lead core

I like the idea of adding a little action to the line and set up

and when the laker hits all the better.

How about gang trolls? and the distance set for the lure?

ok....after a brief demonstration by Markus this past weekend, i've decided i'd like to purchase a leadcore setup....

i know you need a huge reel....so i'd like to recondition my penn 309 for this purpose....

so i guess, first problem, who reconditions Penn reels?

then, i'd assume a nice long rod is important....is 9 feet long enough?

what is the common length on a leadcore rod?

Steve, my core rod (10 color) is 6 feet and heavy. You don't pump a lead core rod so you want short and strong. You just crank it in.

well...

i have a 6'6" Xtra Heavy Shimano Convergence i use for trolling big muskie baits...

would it serve for this purpose?

does the lead core rip up the guides on the rod like wire line does?

Markus what's an SWB?
Never tried leadcore but would like to, learning alot here maybe some one wants to go through it, rod reel knots and lures most effective.
And Markus I've trolled with gang trolls  but that was some time ago. Now I'm interested in trying wire and dipsys but again clueless on where to start! Add cut bait, dodgers and flies to the list, like a few others my trolling has been down riggers and planer boards. Would like to see some educational threads on the young mans methods
