Sick pike?

I was out yesterday and pulled in a 21 inch pike, it had open roundish sores all over its sides and they were all leaking a thick brown puss. I did not touch this fish, I used my pliers and released it. I would of taken a picture, but had not taken the camera with me.

This was in the Ottawa, down by greens creek. It was rather disturbing as this was the second one I caught like this in the past week. I looked very closely at the wounds and they are deep and filled with the gelly-like brown puss, both of these fish had no fight to them at all. Anyone know what this might be?

Hi Something Fishy,

Found something you may be interested in

The home page also has other fish diseases

Nothing ruins the thrill of catching a fish than seeing it's a sicky!

Could be esocid lymphosarcoma.

It affects the esox genus (lucius - pike, masquinongy - muskie, niger - chain pickerel).

Or, it could be any number of water-borne virus or bacteria.

Nasty looking stuff though, huh?

Especially when it hemmorhages.

I know this might not be as bad, but when i fishing with snag yesterday we got nothing but hammer handles and OOS smallies. One of the hammer handles had round bumps on him ALL over his body, It was kinda gross.

I have seen many pike like this. I was told by an MNR agent that it was a type of tumor. Here is a pic of a pike I caught years back that was covered in them, but it still faught like hell.

Sheesh Mikey how can something be redundant when it was posted first? Have to say though...those markings aren't healthy @ all. Never pulled up a fish that looked like that myself. Will def. check out those links when time allows.

I've seen many pike like the one JP's holding(YECH  ) and just can't understand how people can eat this stuff...personally I just don't eat any....but I'm sure something else will get me anyway hehehe! That was a great question though...

Lol no biggie Mikey, I was just messing around. I have eaten fish from certain waters well away from the city and only when the specimen looks good and healthy. Just wondered what everyone thought about it. Oh...and your bang on Mikey, the timing of the posts is a funny coincidence. :)
