I am new to the fishing scene in Ottawa and I don't have a boat. I would like to know of some places to try some good shore fishing on the Rideau (south, around Manotick or further south <1hr drive from Manotick)... thanks!

When I used to live in Manotick we used to wade from below the dam downstream past the bend to the first pool. There was lots of smallies and the odd walleye.
Nicholsons locks and the little creek as your leaving town to the south have given up a variety of fish

On east side of river (River Road) in the bay across from Manotick Marina You can find Pike,Walleye, and LM bass.
Used to live across the road so fished there from shore and in boat all the time.

Since I mostly shore-fish myself, I have found a few decent spots for it..
1. Taylor Park Launch - can be quite busy with boaters, but has produced a fair bit of bass and pike and even a muskie!! And you'll get to meet a few hawk-talkers as they launch their boats!
2. Kars boat launch - on the other side of the river from Taylor Park. I've seen that produce some gorgeous smallies from the launch, both in the little inlet as well as from the dock.
3. Directly across from the Kars launch is the other side of the now non-existant bridge. Apparently there are pilings still in the water that hold some good fish maybe walleye. A little harder to find. It's the one street BEFORE you get to Taylor park from River Rd.
4. Long Island Locks Fish the lower lock area for bass, pike and muskie.
5. Long Island Locks Fish below the dam (at the western edge by locks) for smallies...also a nice wadable area for fly fishing too!!
6. Black's Rapids - from Prince of Wales...park at the launch and just walk around ... lots of good areas for shore fishing there.
7. Billings Bridge/ Carleton U - if you're in town...both are good spots and you can wade through a few areas there if you want to toss flies or whatever!
Hope that helps!
