I was out in Kingston Mills Thursday night, and was standing on the dock, looking down into the water, not paying much attention to anything when two fish, that looked more like gar's than any other i've ever seen swam past me, less than even two inches apart.

They swam stroke for stroke and they cruised less than 5 inches underwater. just after they passed me, they headed out towards the middle of the river and grabbed something off the surface before they took off and I couldn't see them.

Is that really what I saw? I don't know enough about them to say enough for sure. Are they known to be in that area?

Sounds like Gar behavior...not gar pike, just gar.

No worries BimSim, it's commonly used incorrectly. They're just "gar". A lot of people refer to them as "gar pike".

I have seen the same behavoir in Long Point Bay, although never with just two, I have seen groups of 5 - 8 doing that same thing, but the gar were all 10 inches or less...I don't know if that is any help....

If it had a long slender beak.....no doubt what it is....

BS- there are a lot of gar in the Cat below Kingston Mills. Some good ones, too!
