Smallies on ice! harmfull or harmless
The day shortened by 1.26 millionths of a second, considering humans are more evolved and have more brain power than fish, and most people didn't notice the shorter day, I doubt the fish noticed the shorter day either.
Plus the Earth was shifted by about three inches (eight centimeters) off its figure axis, not 33 feet. The 33 feet is the difference between the North-south axis down the centre of the Earth and the "figure axis" of the Earth which is not exactly down the centre because it takes into account, the uneven land masses on the Earth.
Personally if anything the Earth Quake might improve fishing near the quake area the earth quake and waves might stir up nutrients on the bottom of the ocean with would put more food in the water column for zooplankton which would eventually mean more food for small fish, and more food for larger fish....etc...
But I don't think the earth quake will have any effect really on fish behaviour. The Earth moved 3 inches, it didn't turn on its side.
Just my 2 cents...

"Saturday's Chile earthquake was so powerful that it likely shifted an Earth axis and shortened the length of a day, NASA announced Monday.
By speeding up Earth's rotation, the magnitude 8.8 earthquake—the fifth strongest ever recorded, according to the USGS—should have shortened an Earth day by 1.26 millionths of a second, according to new computer-model calculations by geophysicist Richard Gross of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California.
For comparison, the same model estimated that the magnitude 9 Sumatra earthquake in December 2004 shortened the length of a day by 6.8 millionths of a second.
Gross also estimates that the Chile earthquake shifted Earth's figure axis by about three inches (eight centimeters).
Deviating roughly 33 feet (10 meters) from the north-south axis around which Earth revolves, the figure axis is the imaginary line around which the world's unevenly distributed mass is balanced.
To explain the difference, Keith Sverdrup, a seismologist at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, likened Earth to a spinning figure skater holding a rock in one hand. The rotational axis of the skater is still down the middle of the body, he said, but the skater's figure axis is shifted slightly in the direction of the hand holding the rock."

Not the same.

Food for thought....
Also, if you take an aquarium, tilt it and shake it....would the fish, plants and other organisms not be affected?
LOL!
You are changing the orientation of the aquarium with respect to graviation. Tilt the earth all you want - the gravatational center will remain where it is relative to the surface.
And tilt is tilt with respect to how water on the surface of the earth is behaving.

We should drop this topic becuase none of us are really smart enough to understand what we are quoting, discussing and commenting on...science is what counts..

You people seem to have missed the significance of the Chilean earthquake.
My calculations show that the earth will continue to yaw. This will shift oceans. causing the center of gravity to move and weaken significantly. This will cause the earth to actually start to break up, the complete destruction of the earth will occur on December 21, 2012.

But there was a fairly big earthquake on the other side of the earth(Taiwan) so it reshifted the axis a bit so we gained back 3.1457834 x 10 millionth of a second!!! So we will all need to buy a 3 millions dollar Super Computer to see if we should use the drive thru or go in at Timmies for the early morning cup of coffee so we don't miss the morning bite????
Please who gives a Damn . This thread interested me until the friggin axis was mentioned.

Just saying that it could have an impact not that it does...you a scientist? I'm not!
Are you asking me? Well, yes, I am a scientist, although not a geologist of physicist.
And anything "could" have an impact....I just doubt that something this minor (or a global scale) will.

Cool concept - you should float it for a movie!
Thanks for clarifying that. I never said it had a definite impact only that it is too early to tell if it did..on a large or minute scale or like most on here think it had no impact.Half-hitch wrote:Jimmy from the Harley wrote:OK there.....easy now!

Anytime the earth changes in some form it has a ripple effect. Look at the habitat loss up North...
