The House of Fillets

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Going with Black barn paint. Jammer has it on his hut and it works great. The black draws the sun and it warm up a bit. Helps maintain the heat and melt any snow on it. Plus it show's up great froma distance.

THe barn paint is pretty tough.

Sounds good. I know it's too late but what I did was take all the wood in the basement stain it then take it out, cut and build. That way only the cuts were untreated and you built it prestained/painted.

Teppy, I'm keeping it local. It'll be going out on Long Point Bay, Lake Erie....if we ever get any ice.

Rich, the girls are excited about getting out this year. Hailee got out last year and really enjoyed herself.

Will black blend in at night? Would that be a snowmobile ride crusing along only to find a black hof in your way. I can see it for day time and heat. Just this non ice fishing guys question.

:) I think reflectors are a great idea, especially on black huts. I've seen huts obliterated by sleds and trucks on the ice near Georgina. Thank god no one was in them. If you are in them, an all round light isn't a bad idea either.

Stay safe guys and gals.

I may put a couple reflectors on it, but if some idiot wants to try and scream his sled through a village of huts....I wish them luck.

On another note...The House of Fillets is complete! :P I just have to give it a coat of paint this weekend and it'll be ready for action. Looks like winter outside again....lets hope the bay is making some ice. :?

Unfortuntely, you're right Tip up. Break ins are common. I'm just gonna pack my gear in and out. I hate losing stuff.

Here's a couple "pre-paint" pics. I have to get my registration # from MNR and mount it too.

Image

I ran out of plywood and had to use a old piece from the junk pile out back for the door. I would have liked to used 3/4 inch piece of plywood. If this gives me a problem, it'll be an easy change.

Image

I think i'll mount 1 more door hinge in the center, just for little extra strength.

Image

There are identicle benches on either side. Each flips up for storage and has 3 10IN holes to fish. The bbq propane tank easily slides in and out of a custum framed slot beneth one bench. Propane is of course for heating and cooking.

I'm not sure how this thing ended up square on all corners, but it did! I just have to put a little cocking around the roof on the inside and I'm gonna put a few vents in as well. When I find the right piece of plexi glass, I'll cut a small window in the door too.

Just a bit of cosmetic work inside (flip down table, couple shelves, coat hangers) and I'll be ready for the ice!

This was a fun little project. I didn't have any plans to follow, I just kept figuring it out as I went. Total cost for materials...aprox $200.

A suggestion...

Post by Cancatchbass »

Markus:

In addition to a third hinge, you may also want to add a spring-stop or length of light chain connecting the top of the door to the frame- through-bolted. It will prevent the door from tearing loose if opened while there is a strong cross-wind.

Maybe some diagonal bracing in the lower portion for extra rigidity and strength? Nothing worse than a flush-mounted door that gets out of square...

Thanks CCB! Jammer suggested the same thing. I did leave a 1/4IN gap all the way around it and then trimmed it in on the inside to prevent drafts.

I think your right, a diagonal support is needed. Great! I get to use the saw again. I swear...I chuckle everytime I squeeze the trigger of a power tool.
