Wow...be careful out there...

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Everyones so quick to throw in something here. I don't agree with Todds comments at all but it's no need to ring his neck. As soon as someone disagrees, there are more of ya that have to agree to disagree and make it known. Why not acknowledge some of the better in the board(example Toms perchin report) instead of turning the direction of the thread from a sad an awarness perspective to a now negative and opinionized post....

Todd, everyone makes mistakes...in this case there was more than a few made yesterday.

Quebec trout opener? three weeks away............. :D

tragic

Post by mikemicropterus »

This is the spring and I'm sure we will hear of another of these tragedies, though I don't really want to because it could be someone I know and I have seen too much tragedy in the past few years....

I somewhat agree with all the comments made on this subject and some have to be harsh so everyone realises the seriousness of this kind of senseless behavour, not speaking of the comments. But the thought of runnning rapids at this time of year without being properly prepared is the reason for this.
What happens if some kids see this and like some kids are, tries to emulate adult behaviour, the the consequences could have been more tragic.

The 2 boaters were adults and who conciously made the decision based on whatever assumptions they had in their minds. To make such a decision and not prepare for it means they must suffer the consequences. Call it what you will be that tragic or natural selection, it was their choice, and someone has to pick up the pieces. That's the real tragedy here.

I have been on this site for a number of years now and this is often the scenario in the spring and I find that tragic, Why don't some people just listen?????? I don't know.

It's not fair to the families that are left behind. Could this have been averted, possibly and that is what is senseless....

I think that is what is behind some of the comments...this was not some young child walking along the river bank who slipped and fell in...as was stated earlier. This was a conscious act with predicatble consequences and that is what is so tragic about this story. Just like the overloaded boat or loaded boater who falls in while urinating over the side, this is actually the #1 killer of anglers each year, alcohol and the call of nature..

If you have ever seen the kayakers in the spring on the Ottawa River in the section between Britannia and the bridge at Island Park safety is their main concern. They are many kayaks in the water to lend a hand and the kayakers are dressed for the conditions....I watched them one day and I thinks these guys are nuts..as well as having frozen brains but they know the consequence of not taking proper care...for the conditions....

When I read the article it stated the section BETWEEN Fallowfield and Woodroffe not AT these to roads so don't shoot the messanger..

Also I remeber one spring when I was really young and stupid not quite as dumb as I am know but close, I dove into the rapids below Hog's Back Bridge and thought I could make it to the other side just like all the others were doing. It was fine until I got out into the current and then I knew I was f^&*ed. I got swept downstream about 100 yards and I really thougth I may not make it. I can imagine what was going through the mind of the guy who survived this and also what is he going to have to live with for the rest of his life. This could have been his best friend or some kids father......

Just like when I had a motorcylce accident when I was 19 with my buddy on the back. If you don't know what it's like crawling out of a ditch with a broken hand and leg and seeing a crumpled body in the road more than 100 yards away from you and it's not moving, you can't get to him and they don't know he's even there, I'll tell you it's not fun. The 20 minute ambulance ride to the hospital and seeing his smashed face beacuse I had a full face helmet and he had my spare open face was no fun either. I makes you think about a few things.

So lets just learn from this and tell your kids and friends how it happened and how to avoid it happaning to you or anyone else in the future.....

That's the purpose of this board to share information, let's do that....

ON a lighter note

The boat they used to search for the body I built, I feel proud each time I see it being used for rescue purposes.....In one picture they show there is a dog on the bow, that's a cadaver dog that are trained to sniff out dead bodies so there is not much hope for the other boater....

My condolences go out to the survivor and the family of the other boater.....

It's very sad and disturbing news indeed. Water is still bone-chilling to where it takes your breath away, which is easy to forget on a gorgeous day like yesterday and air temp's are so mild.

yes,it is sad, ,my condolences to the family.,but also kudos to the ottawa fire dept.,and the police and other rescue efforts.,very professional,I work with these guy's everyday, and they are as good as any in the world. ofd water rescue was on the ball right away and didn't leave any stone unturned. the residents of the city of ottawa can be proud of our service and be comfortable knowing that these guy's will be there when you need them..
