this might be part of your problem. Fishing bass in the lower Ottawa can be a tough fish. Year in year out it produces some excellent bags on the tournament scene but it also produces a lot of embarrassed tournament guys. Especially is you are trying to fish it within a day or two of a major down pour. The last 3 or 4 seasons I've got my biggest bass of the year on the lower Ottawa but I struggle to catch the numbers I can catch on pretty much any local lake.
Go to any of the local lake and find weeds. Either shallow or deep water weeds. You will catch bass.

I might Just do that. I'll have to try and convince my usual boater to leave his Comfort zone to catch more. Any specific lakes you would Recommend for a first time?
Mississippi Lake in Carleton Place is easy to get to and it is a fish factory. It's 45 minutes from my place in the west side of Orleans. Obviously a lot closer if you are on the west side of Ottawa. There is a good launch right in town, 7 bucks to launch and park. Great lake to fish. If you don't like fishing shallow, then anywhere you find weeds in 3 to 15 feet of water you will find bass on that lake.
Been on Mississippi once this year and we did alright. The wee growth was non existant on opener but I will definitely go back. The Rideau near kemptville is where I fish most and if a frog is your partners favourite thing to use, he will be in heaven. This is where I have held the last two fun fish events and I think everyone had a blast. Well, at least the people who didn't have motor issues. Those just suck the life out of any good day of fishing.
Ill have to convince my buddy to take a trip to Mississippi lake and rideau river now! Awesome day reading all this advice and tips I can't wait to go out next and try out everything!
Fishing is a sport you can never master.....As anglers we learn something new every outing...Could be something major, could be something small but over time it all adds up to putting more fish in the boat. If youve had bad outings, your doing something wrong, most likely your not putting yourself around a lot of fish. You need to find the areas that are holding larger amounts of fish. My suggestion is use navionics app. Look at the lake and its details. Pick a few areas on the map and start fishing. If you dont get bit move immediately. Dont stick around for hours if your not getting bit. Cover water and find those aggressive fish that want to eat.
But most importantly learn to fish the conditions....thats the biggest part of the puzzle.
Weather = wind, calm, rain, sunny skies, over cast etc...figure out what they like when these conditions present them selves
Water = high water, low water, cold, warm, stained, muddy, dirty etc..... pick the right colors for the water clarity, or fish the right areas when water is unusually high or low
Forage = frogs, craw, baitfish, bluegills, etc....figure out what they are eating
Conditions change daily, hourly, and by the minute...and if you dont change and keep doing the same thing with not adapting youll continue to have 4-5 fish days.
confidence is everything in fishing, so you should stick to the presentations you know and like at first and try to pick other things up along the way. If your confident in something you tend to throw it longer and try harder to catch something.
