I have a theory on why the fish seem to fight a little harder this time of year ...
1) They have survived all the summer and thus are in "fighting form" by now".
2) They are eating more aggressively in the fall to up their fat stores for winter.
3) Summer time they can be just like us ... lethargic and don't put up as much of a fight.
I used to fish a lot in a large bay half way between smiths fall and perth ... I've caught lots of large bass and I recall one in particular a years back that was a little over 5.5 lbs ... it fought hard but short ... whereas I caught fish half that size in the same area in the fall, and they fought like a nickel. I know growing up when we would go for all brookies it was also the case ... they fought twice as hard in the fall as the spring or summer fish. Especially the fish that were able to make the journey from the larger lake to the river, brook and up to a chain of smaller lakes .. they seemed to be the strongest of all.
Thats my theory ... any others ?

Good to see you are getting in to em and that they are up shallow. Same water temps in the lake I have been fish'n but the hump (covered in milfoil) in that lake seems to be fishless for whatever reason.
Thanks for the specifics like water temp, lures and depth. Always good to compare with. So I'm not the only one throwing topwaters in cold water!
