A Bad day at a Lake we never fished before

and you wonder why fishing has gone downhill on pretty much every major river and lake system in ontario thanks MNR

There were 4 other guys on the shore in the same group keeping every fish they hooked up.

That is 36 fish a day if they stay legal. How long can that be sustained? They are there almost as much as I am. 3 times a week or so... 108 fish a week... that is close to 1300 fish over a three month period of July-August-September. (All within their legal rights...)

That is a lot!!

even though there is a daily limit, is there not a possession limit as well? in Ontario you are only allowed to have your daily limit in your freezer at home. the only way to be able to keep your limit daily every day is if you are eating your daily catch EVERY day.

That was my thought as well??? Very well could be eating 36 bass a day and that would explain the tooth issue!! Mercury has a way of making ur teeth fall out and then all you have is summer teeth...summer here summer there!!

It's the same in Qc. You are not allowed to hold, whether in your freezer, your stringer, your fridge, your cooler, etc.. more than the daily possession limit.

So if you've got one bass at home in the freezer, one head of a bass in the trash can (after eating) and you have 5 bass on a stringer, technically, you are poaching and in possession of more than your daily limit. Some CO's will overlook the fish in the trash can, but I know of 2 of them who weren't too lenient 3 years ago at the Gouin...

they have to have reasonable cause in order to check. here if we have concerns, we can use the MNR poacher tips line.

I think that the threat of being caught on the water here in ON is becoming slimmer every year ... I don't see them on the lakes and rivers where I've fished ... and I've spent days and days at lodges with a lot of other guys and no sign of an officer except the occasional one in the distance.

Compare that to in Quebec where you feel their presence all the time ... I've never been to a lodge yet where we didn't see their officers at least once during our stay. Believe me we kept within the rules.

in QC I follow the laws to the letter also. just last week my wife and I were stopped on the water by the OPP. they were very thorough with there search.

We can't presume to know these people and their needs.

We all have hunting licences (for fish) and probably small game and deer too. We need to remember we are hunters and catch and release is a very new phenomenon. My grandfather's never released anything, if they caught it we were eating it.

If I saw these people I would be congratulating them on such a great catch and trying to find there secret. I personally prefer to eat 3 or 4 smaller bass but bigger ones are good too.

I went to Barhaven a little while ago and saw dozens and dozens of deer in some fields on the way in.. I thought it was a deer farm!!

I wish I could find a lake that would produce so many nice fish. Even though I've never caught a LMB over 3 pounds in my life, I would let everyone of those fish go without hesitation. I've never eaten Bass and to me they are just a catch and release fish. However, I have heard they are quite tasty once in a while but having 9 fish on a stringer, I am sure some will go to waste.

Any fish I don't eat gets put in the freezer and a family of 5+ can eat a lot of fish. It seems everyone assumes the worst of people around here. Bass is very tasty by the way, try some breaded bass and you'll love this abundant tasty little fish. I catch my limit on Ottawa and Rideau all the time with YUM dingers, not always 4lb more often 2-3lbs.

I was at a club meeting and the guest speaker was a well known and respected fisheries biologist and he said that with global warming bass were becoming too numerous and it was time to institute a commercial fishery for bass.

I'm sorry but spending a total of about 17 hours on the st lawrence and catching one large mouth bass in prime structure under 1 lb is not exactly a good fishery and no global warming doesn't seem to have boosted the population..

the result of a tournament earlier this year was directly caused to global warming, we arrived at the launch after a day being unlucky as usual only to find out that the people in charge of the tournament are going around to everyone in the park asking if we want bass due to it being so abnormally hot and people missmanaging the fish about 3/4 of them died.. and this is a big tournament I remember seeing about 25-30 boats.. depending on how much they caught that's a TON of bass dead, not to include people who illegally over fish them and i have personally seen this time and time again.

as for deer population I'm pretty positive one of the least affected areas was west north west of there. I'm in cornwall and I scout heavily for deer and travel on a nightly basis in prime deer country. I have counted 5 deer that i have seen in the past 3 months. not good.
