Actually, it has nothing to do with how much energy they expend. The production of eggs cosumes huge amounts of proteins and fats. The fact that these fish are sterile does not mean that eggs are not formed however when the eggs are never deposited for spawning, the fish merely absorbes the eggs into its body(kind of like a fat reserve). A fish(sterile female) will pack on weight up to five times faster in a single growing season. Also worth mentioning is that any of the brood stock that is used in these programs are HUGE! 15-20 lbs is common. Big parents= big babies.
