Big spinner baits. Fudally, M/G, etc etc. If the spinner bait isn't big enough, add a big grub on the trailer.

Most productive to date is this monster I got from Stacy

notice the missing bit from the tail :D

musky lures

Post by Big Jim »

Hey Guy's I have been catching lots of decent fish on jig's the last few years, in fact I got one last year that was 54 1/2 inches, that was almost as big around as me--well I did say "almost".

When I eventually got it gutted and on the Bar-B-Q it took 22 boxes of Fish Crisp to coat it, so in the future you can use this as a rule of thumb.

It works out to about 4.8 boxes per foot---pretty simple. So now when you hit a hog this fall you will know how many boxes to pick-up on the way home.

Enjoy your turkey!!!

That was #3 in "MuskyRecepies.com"

That late fall fishin just gets tooo cold for me

Any ski I have accidently caught while pike or bass fishing has been on a spinner bait with big willow leaf spinners that cut close to the top of the water
while retrieving fast.

Good luck with em.

Hi, everyone...

I finally got a little chunk of time to myself -- well sort of, the kids are at my feet playing -- to check out everyone's advice. It's been great to read some choices which I already felt strongly about, and also to get some new information.

Kpin, that article from Justin Hoffman is EXCELLENT for newbies like myself: lots of good, basic info and some tips which I made mental notes of. I hope everyone who is interested in learning something on muskie fishing takes a few minutes out and read Justin's article.

Keep the info coming. I feel the need for a trip to the tackle shop AND the lake. :D

Thanks!

W.

If 12" suckers don't count... I have to go with the Grim Reaper bucktail tipped with a black grub.

I was going to buy a Suick for sure, Snag. Then my brother did something nice, and gave me one out of his arsenal. It's a smaller one, I think it's probably 8" (?) but with tiger muskies, bigger isn't always better.

I need a heavier rod to give it a good swipe/jerk. The one I have is definitely not suitable for the heavier lures. It's funny, because when I got it for Christmas, it seemed so much stiffer than the ones I've used in the past. But once you put muskie lures on, it's got too much flex. Same with my reel: need a tough-stuff upgrade. Also, if I hook into something larger than the low 30's (") fish I've found to date, I'm gonna be in deep doo-doo.

More $$ thrown after muskies.

I know exactly what you mean wolfe!! You just can't throw a muskie bait without a decent heavy action muskie combo. Especially a smooth reel makes it so much easier.

I bought an Abu Garcia Ultracast 6501 off Bobber's neighbour and I love it.

It came with a shakespeare intrepid heavy action rod which isn't necessarily the best, but with my low budget its was fine with me!

I bought it well before the muskie bite, and some muskie lures a few months later... if you spend less at a time, it seems less expensive.
