Looking for advice... I own a Scott Wilderness 16ft. fiberglass canoe. Will be fishing with another adult many times.
I want to buy a Battery, Battery Charger, Electric Trolling Motor, Long Cables and the "thing that you mount on your canoe so you can use an Electric Trolling motor".
Questions I have:
1. What type of Electric Trolling Motor should I buy along with shaft size and power?
2. What type of Battery and Charger would you recommend?
3. Should I put the battery in something before using it in the canoe?

I used an electric in a canoe for a long time.
First off get a deep cycle battery and any charger that charges deep cycles - They have marine ones now that are fairly cheap.è They have batterie cases if you want but I never used them.
As for electric motor, go as big as you can afford. I never had any type of mounting bracket on the canoe because the electric turns 360 you just have to clamp directly to the fiberglass on the side. You can use 2 small pieces of wood if you're worried about cracking the fiberglass.

The more true you can mount the electric the more true your canoe will run. So make your canoe a flat back so the motor will be as directly at the stern as possible. Wait for pics.
Get the most thrust you can afford. I have a 38lb thrust and it is perfect for my use, two adults and 16 foot plastic (heavy) canoe.
If you join us on the May 28th pike hunt at Petrie you'll probably get to see many differnet set ups.
This year I will make a holder for the battery for no other reason than I cannot think of anymore custom work to do on my canoe.
I didn't get the lagest battery and I could troll for up to 5 hours before I noticed and lag in the power. For cables I used 16 foot booster cables.
Take a look for the Red Rocket in the boat picture section for a better idea.

Make sure you get a charger with an auto shut off. It will significantly increase your battery life and save $$$ in the long run. There are lots of options for deep cycle batteries, look for one that will last you as long as you normally fish. I fish tournaments so it is important that mine last all day so I have premium batteries!
Here's a measuring stick (damn derby 
) I made for the canoe. I made it 1/8 inch longer than the width of the canoe and glued pieces of mouse pads on both sides to give it a really snug fit, so snug it stayed on after rolling the canoe.

I have 16 ft sq. back with a 36 lb thrust minkota. I bought a Energizer deep cycle battery at walmart and a charger there too. the battery weighs a ton, but lasts all weekend going full throttle. (make sure you recharge it after each trip) My canoe can hold two adults and my dog no problem. I'm even adding a fishfinder to it this summer/spring. Just be careful on windy days, when the water gets too choppy, i wont go out. heres some pics of my setup.
