Well over the past 3 months my engineering group and i have been working on producing an electric downrigger that has the best of every world! 300FT/sec, fully adjustable rod holders, Clip in mounting system, telescopic boom, and we have managed to have a rough cost of 200.00 which means retail could be 300-400 dollars which was our goal! Here is the first design prototype any feedback would be great! Its all stainless except the spool. The clutch has not been put on yet, havent calculated the forces required to hold it yet etc...
Oh no she wont buckle, have a safety factor of about 4 times on that boom, she should be able to support 100lbs before it hits plastic deformation. Meaning over 100lbs will make it bend and stay bent! FFF yes we need a prototype, im working with an injection moulding company to try to get some plastic spools made up! And working on the motors and gear boxes!
Hoover, I love the stainess too, but if your goal is a $200 material cost, you might be better off going with plastic for the rod holders. The stainless should really be a higher material cost.
Dragged this topic out of the basement. Hoover is going to send me drawings pdf format. Mr.J. I take it you have a mechanical engineering background? He works in solid edge, I'm sure there is a tranlator for I-Deas mechanical, I may need your help and advice, i would like to see their idea take form in a working unit!
Nope, not mechanical but electrical but I do have an aptitude for mechanical and I am allowed to do some of my own mechanical design work for the simpler things in life like card guides and brackets and stiffeners but nothing with such a high moment of inertia (sp?) as this.
Yes I do believe there is a translator for reading solid edge into I-deas so maybe I can help. I also work with AutoCad at home for my own play time stuff around the house and I think I could get my hands on an Iges translator and chip in that way.
But it looks like these guys have got their act together. But hey I can do rapid prototype circuit cards at a very reasonable price if anyone needs.
For those who I work with and are reading this I deny everything.
Mr.J. a translator may well be what I need! Glad you have some mechanical knowledge and an IGES what ever will be required! MT hope we can make it fly, just need to see the big picture.
The design look nice and the supports look strong... Looks like a winner.
I have one question about the steel line and the alignment with the rollers.. The spool seems kinda high so the line looks like it will come out at a sharp angle and it looks like it would clip the edge of the spool (especially when lots of wire is out - and the line is coming from the deep in the spool. I'm assuming the line goes under the first roller and above the second to allow for the telescopic boom right ? If you have a pic with the line drawn in - maybe my brain could compute it.
oh, and 300FT/sec ???? impressive but i'd hate to be on the receiving end of 10 lb of lead... reminds me of the ad where the guy installs a really fast garage door opener... "when your into it, your really into it
