Lake Champlain 2nd Annual Fishing Trip May 6th-9th

Post by Spence Scout »

Hey guys so on May 6th-9th was our annual Lake Champlain fishing trip. I made the drive from Kitchener to Ottawa on the 5th to meet my brother and Bobby Jordan. We left at 4am and met up with 3 other boats. Mark Boroweicki of the Ottawa Senators was one of them. We got to the ramp finally after 4 or 5 pit stops ans some well needed caffeinated beverages. We launched and immediately made our way to a spot we fared out well last year. It started slow and we realized the water temps were quite cold for this time of year. It was between 51-56 degrees in main lake and shorelines. We got a few fish and some bites but kept moving shallower. Noticing the water kept getting slightly warmer but the fish got smaller. We were catching the males that were in the shallows getting ready to spawn.

Day #1 ended and we would of had about a 21lbs bag for five best fish. Biggest fish being a 4lb 14oz, With only 17 bites.

Day #2 got easier as well found warmer water of about 60-64 degrees in a big shallow back bay with grass growing just to about 1 ft from the surface of the water. Key was casting the baits over the grass and snapping it out of the grass when it got hung up. We got lots of key bites right after the snap! You could tell which bites were the big girls! This area was small but the female fish kept replenishing over the course of the day. We would just merge off it for awhile then go back and get more over and over. We would of had about 23lb on Day#2 for five fish. Biggest fish being 6lbs. I got a real good Pike in the 8lb range as well as Bobby getting a Carp in the side of the mouth also on a moving bait. Two years in a row now Bobby has caught a carp on a moving bait in the mouth. We also found the one and only largemouth bed all weekend by anybody. Crazy thing is I let Bobby fish for the male bass who was about 3lbs. He tried a beaver bait, he tried a white tube, but heres the kicker he tried a 4 inch senko the bass looked insulted. I then told him to put this on (Jackall 4.8 inch flickshake) he lightly dropped it into the bed and within 8 seconds he was hooked up! All I had to say was told ya! LOL We got about 35 bites this day

Day #3 was a half day we fished until 12 noon. The whole weekend was chilly and cold we never took off our hoodies or jeans. This day was the coldest and our back bay temps dropped from 64 degrees to 60 over night. thats 4 degrees in one single night. We got off and on rain and South winds changed into North winds real quick. Keeping with our Day #2 pattern we managed another 21lb sac into the boat for our best five fish. Biggest being a 4lb 9oz bass. I gave Bobby the nickname "Big Fish Bobby Jordan" because he was a beast getting them to go one after the other. I had my day Saturday his was Sunday..

On in all it was a blast. We had 4 boats and nine guys on a mission. It was great making new friends and telling fish stories, sharing patterns, tips and secrets. We talked to several locals and they told us this weekend was weird and that 16-18lb was a good day out there. Well we felt like we accomplished our goal and fared out really well. We were the only boat to land a 6lb fish and a couple over 5lbs.

We didnt have pics for our last day due to our hands being cold. Also our group caught a whack load of small fish unlike RJ did in his trip a week prior.

Amazing fact was there wasnt one crankbait fish caught in our boat. And we threw it everyday for long periods of time!

Thanks for reporting back as you said you would.

Those are some nice bass. The carp must have been a surprise, especially two years in a row.

Thanks again for the report and hope to see you reporting regularly again, like the "good old days" of fish-hawk.
