Trout??
Trout??
I might try some trout fishing in Toronto in a river which has browns and other trout. I've never fished for them before and will be using spinning gear. What techniques should I use? I'm thinking floats and worms and small spinners. Any ideas? I'm assuming I should be looking for pools and eddys, is this right?

Hey there Gone'fishin, when are you planning to go up and what rivers are you planning on fishing. I head up for the spawning runs to the Lake O tribs.
If you are heading up soon then you may have to do some walking in search of some resident browns or rainbows ( they are there but could be hard to find ). However if you are planning on heading up for the fall run then you are looking at sept for the salmon and early to mid oct for the brows and bows...typically anyways lol
As for gear, I have used a spinning outfit up there with a 6 1/2 ft ugly stick and it will work.( I now use an 11 1/2 noodle rod with my spion reel )..I was using 8 lb sensithin linestraight through...they can be alot more funny though and if that is the case I would run maybe 10 lb main line to a 4-6 lb leader ... I use flourocarbon ( vanish for this ) run your main line to a very small swivel then about 2-3 ft ( depnding of course on depth of the pool you are fishing ) off the swivel for a leader. Just above your leader run a float .. thill or blackbird will work fine. place a sinker just below you float to make sure it stays upright. Place more sinkers going bigger to smaller to smallest all the way down the leader to about 8 inches above your hook ( 12/0 or 10/0 gamigatsu work great ) spacing the sinkers about 6 inches or so apart. For bait I would typically use Rainbow roe ( salmon and brown roe work as well and brown roe sometimes better ) tie the roe in diferent sizes of sacs ..small to large and keep some single eggs just in case. You can also try 3- 4 " berkley power worms ( pink ).
Also try some flies like wooly buggers with or without the bead head on them ...seen both work.
Hope this is helpful and if I can offer any assistance, let me know here or send me a PM.
Cheers

Great reply Chrome I taught you well
But also Gone, you can also use live dew worms which are very efective, maggots for spooky fish in clear water and this is a prob you will be faced with often
The fish tend to run up their migratory rivers to spawn sometimes feed (this is salmon)and eventually die off.You will notice the salmon you are catching are a brownish coulor and that is when they r in the spawning mode. The salmon will move in pending on weather fronts by early to mid sept,a small or large run at a time. You can expect to see alot of people on the water using many different techs for these fish. When eventually the salmon begin to slow down or are in full spawn in the tribz the browns will move into spawn and feed on the neglected salmon roe. This is your best chance at a shore brown(big ones too)Then will follow the steelhead behind the browns(Though you can go out and get a mixed bag in Sept the best is to watch the run of fish)Your best bet for a fall bow is Brown trout roe,I say this because it is like gold in the fall to winter the chromers just gobble it up!second is salmon roe all fish will take it and is your best 2nd choice (if fishing roe bags)Steelhead are generally a spring spawn fish and tend to shy away from their own spawn in the fall but there is a few fall spawners that may take it,the best is leave the rainbow roe for the spring.Artaficials range from flies as Chrome has said,in the fall brown and olive wooly buggers are better for salmon and darker flies all around are good to start with. When in high stained water upsize your worm, roe bag,or anybait you r usin, same if fishing deep pools where the fish cannot be seen.Clear water try to downsize and find fish in holes, pockets rapids that arent to spooky, also look for a place where not to many other fisherman are.
About this time of year is early for them and in the next few weeks you can try tossing spoons (little cleos, williams and so on)off the piers of the big pond. For this 10lb line all the way to the spoon is fine but you will need a longer rod to fight em in the bigger water,a 10 1/2 will do just fine.
Any specific area you need info on Ill be happy to send you in the right direction, you may want to travel a little bit other than right in T.O a 1/2 hr to a 3 hr drive could mean the difference of a good day.
Also it would be best to invest in a pair of hip waders to walk the rivers, creeks and be able to get to certain spots easier.
Your best spot to try to get set up would be Tightlines in Pickering, great staff and not to far of a drive from T.O,also they have a great selection to get started and will fill you full of knowledge aswell
Anymore detailed info plz dont hesitate to drop me a line or come sept if you would like to meet up for a day I can offer all tips in person aswell
A bit of a read but hope it helps,T.L F.F
P.S sry Gone thought you lived in T.O
if you need anymore info gimmie a shout @ 446-0075 and Id be happy to take you with us on an upcoming trip

Thanks guys that's a lot of info
I'm going to print it off and have a real good look at it on the drive up to T.O. I'd also love to try for these guys with someone who knows how to get them (you) since I'm not properly equipt and probably won't have too much luck if any. In general, I try to base my schedule around fishing, so whenever the runs start write me a PM and we'll find a day to get out. I've been wanting to try since last year and haven't had the chance. I'm not sure of the river but it runs under Bloor St. in T.O. Thanks agian for the tips.
