Bass and Pike Water for Steady Action . . .

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Bass and Pike Water for Steady Action . . .

Post by NMG »

Hi everyone,

I have my stepfather coming out from BC in June and I'd like to get him into some Bass and Pike as he's never caught them. Do any of you have any suggestions for some places fairly close to Kanata (say no more than 1 to 1.5 hour drive one way) where we could get into some fairly consistent action? I'm NOT too concerned about big fish or wanting any secret spots, just looking for suggestions on places that are easier to fish than others and where the payoff would be numbers as opposed to hawgs.

I was going to hit the Rideau, Ottawa and possibly the St. Lawrence, mainly because those are the areas I'm familiar with. I've had sporadic luck on them though, so if there is some other stuff worth considering, I'd be greatly appreciative of the suggestion.

We will be heading out just a couple of days after bass opens and I was hoping to get into some topwater action, but I'm really not all that fussy so long as we have a good shot at getting into some fish.

Thanks in advance for any advice you can throw my way!

You could try White Lake. Tons of 1 to 2 pounders there. There's a good, free launch at the Waba cottage museum. Also it never gets to windy and if it does there are tons of bays to tuck into. Jon

Hey, thanks for the suggestions guys, much appreciated! I've heard White is pretty nice and I wanted to check it out last year, just didn't have enough time.

I just returned from a morning of fishing at Lower Rideau Lake. The pike were biting fairly well....3-4 pound range. Reeled in a nice 2.5 lb OOS largie, too.

I think this lake should be considered.

Mississippi river, between Appleton and Almonte, launched from Appleton. It's about 10 km of river and you might only run into a few other boats. No tubers or seedoos usually. You won't get large bass or pike, but you will get lots of them.

For sheer volume, Constance Lake can be a heck of a lot of fun for hammer-head sized pike and bass. As another poster mentioned, the nice thing about the small lakes is they can be easily fished on windy days.

Your post didn't mention shore or boat - I assume you are in a boat?

Good luck!!!

but something tells me that Ottawa fishing isn't going to meet BC standards

Not sure if its in your budget, but I would strongly recommend giving RJ or Yannick Fishing a call, I wouldn't want to get skunked with your family around
They'll be able to put you on several different species and best of all its about spending time with your Stepfather.
I believe RJ is closer to you.
Just an idea. :P

Hey NMG. I would throw a second on trying with Yan or RJ but if you are the self trying kind of guy then I would also 2nd Appleton. You can catch pretty much most common species there and I do know you can get some nice pike. bass and pan fish from here. You can fish the whole river almost to Almonte if you know the section well enough or you can stay in the bay right by the launch and still have a great time. I must spend most of my time within the bay as I usually go after work for a quick fish. No waiting to launch ( most times ) free to launch and also not much competition. If you do go there give me a PM and I will help you out with some spots to try.

Cheers
Fishing isn't a matter of life and death....
It's much more important.

Thanks guys! My bass season starts late in June though, but pike shouldn't be a problem, and of course walleye are a given!

Wow, thanks for the replies everyone, this is very helpful!

Both my parents are coming out and they haven't seen grandson in a while so the whole week is going to be scheduled based on weather, mood of the little guy, other stuff they want to do, etc. The fishing trips will be fit in where we can so it would be very tough to pick a day and stick to it. That said, if we can pin down a date with enough advance notice, I'll definitely consider giving Yannick or RJ a shout.

You may not realize it but the fishing out here can indeed rival BC, it's just different. Way more of a warm water focus around here, whereas BC is more cold water, trout and salmon. Both have their upside.

Will definitely check out some of the spots on the list!

Thanks for the suggestion of having him use of guide service fellas. Appreciate that.

Lots of options for you in these parts, all of which have been mentioned. The Miss, Constance and White are solid suggestions for sure.

Could do a mixed bag with us on Big Rideau of Pike, Bass and Lakers..
