First time on the water this year

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

First time on the water this year

Post by FishingFreak13 »

Today was my official first day on the water :D :D :D :D :D I was fishing on a small lake in the calebogie area and only brought 2 rods, one was for crankbaits and one was for my favorite bait the spinnerbait. I only spent 2 hours on the water but managed to hook into 12 pike none of them had much size to them. I also hooked into 6 OOS bass (5 largemouth and 1 Smallmouth) all caught on a spinnerbait. Something that has kept me wondering for a while is why is bass season closed for so long compared to walleye and pike who are really only closed for 2 or 3 months. All the bass I caught were very aggressive and all were definitely done spawning. Why is it that bass is closed for so long compared to the other spieces?

Male bass are very aggressive when guarding the nest after spawning, so it makes for an easy target. Anytime you pull them off the nest perch and sunfish are in there like a dirty shirt raiding the nest. Hence the reason for the late start to the season to protect the fry.
