Advice on Flipping Stick
Hi everyone
Every year I try to actively pursue one new technique and this year is to do more flipping. As a belated Christmas present to myself I'm going to be getting a flipping stick. I've done a ton of reading and have done flipping before but want to get better equipment.
What are everyone's thoughts on their favourite brand / model?
Right now I'm leaning toward a Loomis 7'5 MH Mossy Back w/fast tip (although there are tons of options out there). I'm 6'4 so I can handle a longer rod.
I'm hoping to pick something up at the Spring Fishing & Boat Show in Toronto so I have some time to make a decision.
Thanks!

I switched all my gloomis rods for dobyns. and i absolutely love them. plus they have a pretty good warranty. last year a used a savvy 735 but next year i will be using a 745 DX.
Paddletales has both gloomis and dobyns in stock, if head out there you can compare them

I use a Dobyns DX745 for Pitching (Short underhand casts to pockets). I was originally looking at the DX795, but Brad Guenette recomended the DX745 and said the 795 was better suited for Flipping and Punching.

+1 For the DX745! I use it as a jig rod but it also excels at pitching. For me anything over 3/4oz plus plastic gets pushed to the DX795. You may also want to look at the new DX746 if you do not like the length of the 795.

I pitch (jigs, t-rigs, and even big fat senko baits) with the DX745 and it excels at those applications.
I don't truly 'flip' (with fixed amount of line)... not many people do I would wager.
For anything a bit heavier - into punching territory - you may want a more stout rod as I find the DX745 is good to about 3/4 or 1oz + plastic... depending on the size of plastic. Beyond that and the tip is too loaded and not as nice to work with.

Totally agree with this.curls wrote:I pitch (jigs, t-rigs, and even big fat senko baits) with the DX745 and it excels at those applications.

Also, as Brad mentioned, I'd be taking a serious look at the new Dobyns DX746C

Re: Advice on Flipping Stick
After looking at the price of the mosseyback, I am thinking the DX might cost a little more than you want to spend. With that being said, River Monster was sold on the 745 by making 3 casts with mine. It is a very sensitive stick that loads well and is quite versatile. The cost is around $350.00 if I remember correctly ( you can double check with Toobinator)
If you wanted to try a Dobyns and want to stay in line with what a Mossyback would cost, you would be wise to checck out the Champion series in either the 735/736 or if you want the length, the 735FLIP/766FLIP. The only casting rod I have used in the Champion series is a 734 so I cannot provide information on how these rods will fish but the 734 is the reason I have as many Dobyns Rods as I do and have no reason not to recomend them. For the info here, I went and checked out Dobynsrods.com and looked up what I would buy for that price point.

Re: Advice on Flipping Stick
Wow, thanks for the input. A lot of Dobyns recommendations.
I'll check out the website and hopefully handle a few in the near future.
My budget is flexible so I can go up or down beyond the $325 that the mossy back is.

Well, be sure to report back regardless of what you decide! There is nothing better than hearing other peoples opinions even if they aren't the same as yours. There are a few different places I have heard to get Dobyns Rods in Toronto so you should not have too hard of a time finding one.
Good luck with your search! Other than fishing, researching new rods keeps me busy throughout the winter.

Pro j stocks Dobyns rods. They will be at the shows coming up with all the 2014 lineup.

Re: Advice on Flipping Stick
Winter is a dangerous time for me in terms of spending. By time February rolls around, I'm itching to buy something new.
All the new fishing shows and exhibitions don't help either.
I'll definitely report back on the final decision. Thanks everyone. Great insight from the group!

Re: Advice on Flipping Stick
I'm another Dobyns fan.
I would like to up-grade my flipping stick this year and I am planning on going with the Champion series of rod.
Be careful with Dobyns....it will become a sickness that will make you replace all your rods with Dobyns rods.
Good luck with your decision,
Steve
