A most interesting catch!!

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

A most interesting catch!!

Post by Yannick Loranger »

I can't catch a largemouth to save my life, but anchors and now fish traps (actual traps, not ice fishing tents) that I can do!Image
Snagged a rope with a bottom bouncer, this was at the other end. Felt I had a duty to take it out of the water.
Now can I get largies tomorrow please!!

There was a tag that read "CO" and a few numbers. I'll call it in to the MNR and Fisheries and Oceans, if they can't trace it back, I'll donate it to my alma mater.

Sounds like an MNR survey sampling trap.

It is possible that the C.O and the number is the identification number of a Conservation Officer. Could be an MNR trap.
Umm, excuse me, but where exactly am I going????? And, what am I doing in this handbasket?????

If you were on the Ottawa I think you need to contact MNR biologists from FMZ 12. This could be one of their sampling nets as others have suggested or a commercial net.

Tania Baker: tania.baker@ontario.ca
Anne Bendig: anne.bendig@ontario.ca

You might also try Scott Smithers from FMZ 18: scott.smithers@ontario.ca

I would try all three and give them as many details of its location and identification as possible.

Weird catch that's for sure.

Wow, that beats the bright green rattling fat rap I caught in lake clear two weeks ago.... snagged some line in the water, one end had the lure, the other nothing. Was half hoping there would be a rod on it haha.

I contacted the MNR today. Turns out it belongs to a commercial fisherman who has a license to have 20 of these hoop nets. I'm just waiting for this fisherman's contact info so he can come claim his trap.
