Ontario/NY waters?
Ontario/NY waters?
quick question, heading to the st. lawrence river this weekens and was wondering if I can fish anywhere on the river with an Ontario sports license or do I have to stay omn the Ontario side....I would think its ok, similar to the QUE/ON borders on the Ottawa R.
If anyone could confirm or correct me on this that would be awesome
Thanks,

You are right Seabass, you c annot fish the U.S side with only an Ont. license.
But I am not sure what is needed, somebody else will have to give you the particulars.

Don't even anchor on the US side and do not for one second underestimate the trouble you can get into. Although US guides anchor over here. On their side they have a bunch of border patrol guys that are not from the area. They could be ex military or have seen time on the southern border. Many have southern accents and a Canadian fisherman is no different from a Mexican illegal or drug runner....no different. Not like in the old days when he was probably a local who went to school at Lafargeville or Clayton or A Bay.
Even if you haven't broken a law they will find one you have or else detain you and harrass you until you lose patience or temper and if that happens look out! Basically they will tell you as a Canadian citizen in US waters you have no rights.....let that sink in and understand all it implies.....YOU HAVE NO RIGHTS.
I have lived along the border here all my life. Afte 911 and all the orange and red alerts etc.. it changed and became more and more restrictive. With Obama we thought things would change. Canadians seem to think democrats are friendlier towards Canadians.....not so.
Obama's Secretary of Homeland Security is Janet Napolitano former Govenor of Arizona who like Obama owes much of her elected success to the huge growing Hispanic population in the US. They cannot and will not treat Canadians any different lest it looks like favourable treatment to us and that would not fly with the Hispanics that voted them into office. So as I say.......a Canadian out for a day of fishing....no different from a potential illegal alien, drug runner or terrorist. Get use to it!

There are many good folks from the Mid Atlantic and Northeast States that have been coming to Canada for generations. I ask as a favour and as insurance towards any future restrictions Canada may impose against your access to our country in retaliation to help stop this nonsense on the northern border. Contact your Senator, Congressman etc..
Last month my wife and I on a shopping trip to Watertown had my car keys, wallet, purse. Blackberry, cell phone taken from us. We were detained in a locked room. My wife is a diabetic and they dumped out her insulin and needles, temporily seized my heart medication. When my wife asked about the security of our personal items the customs officer said if anyone tries to take anything I'll shoot'em....NICE. They even went thru my private messages on my Blackberry.
As it was explained to me....you have no rights in the USA. I have lived 10 minutes from that bridge my whole life (50 years) and have crossed 50-100 times a year. This is getting really stupid.
A while back I went fishing to a trout stream on the Tug Hill south of Watertown. Its a remote area with few people and when I got to the stream I was a little bit unnerved by a plain sedan that stopped a few hundreds yards away with a guy sitting in the car watching me. I went into the woods anyway and walked upstream to fish while keeping an eye out. After a few minutes fishing I heard a noise that startled me and turned to see this guy in uniform behind me.
He was nice enough but skeptical that I was there to just fish. I told him I'd been coming here for 30 years and that we had nothing like this back home. I told him I taught fly fishing and that of the many guys from Canada I'd taught they all fished over here..... every week.
Unknown to me he had seen me at the 1000 Islands Bridge and was suspiscious because I was alone and followed me for 2 hours!! The whole time we spoke in those remote woods he kept his hand on his sidearm. Creepy and intimidating are understatements. I will only fish streams that have other fishermen around. No more trips to those secret Tug Hill streams.

Wow, Steve, what a story! I can tell you that one of our guys got stopped comin in to Canada this trip. Paul went up with his son and a friend of his sons', went up the tuesday before us, the customs agent stopped his car and took everything off including a luggage shell on the roof of his Hummer. Drug sniffing dogs went through it all, it was a 2 hour delay, Paul was not happy since we have never encountered this since we have been going north. Guess it was random or they didn't like something, on the way back we were on line for 20 minutes or so and I saw at least 5 cars pulled over, in all the time I've been goin north I've never seen one at all.
The border agent said Paul was sitting in the "drug runner's seat", the back seat of the truck, I'm sure he knew by the computer who he was, asked us where we stayed and what lake we fished and commented"what did you fish for, walleye'? I suspect he knew there are no eyes in Gan Lake, tryin to trip us up. It was scary, nothin like your exploits but unsettling none the less.
I'm sure if they knew you the treatment would not have been so harsh, I apologize for the behavior, you are aces in my book!
Your American Pal
Joe.

Hey Joe....I hate that sh1t when our people do it. I hate that they have sidearms now. Let me tell you the attitude of our officers since they got the guns and the new black uniforms has changed 100%. I come down on our border people when they cross the line. I live here and as a Canadian citizen in MY own country I take no crap from them.
A few years back on a Sunday we were coming back from Mothers Day brunch at the Edgewood with my Mom and Dad and a jerk officer named Bruno.....who actually knew who I was said to me in front of my parents, wife and daughter...."Where'd did you get this new car....are you a car dealer? ...NO? Well then perhaps you are some kind of dealer then? I think so eh?
I put my finger in his face and said you and I are done. My next conversation will be with your supervisor. Now the super I'd known for years.
Bruno has been very nice ever since.
Gord Brown the Conservative MP for Leeds and Grenville families income comes from tourism. He is a personal friend I will tell him about it next time I see him in the grocery store. You should have told Bob Griffen about....he'd giv'em hell for sure

WOW
...really?...uumm you guys are scaring me
Seriously though I had no idea they are that strict on the Larry, do you guys think they (US) would bother me if im in the middle of the river...even though if you were to look at the map I would technicaly be on their side of the line.
I am definately not going anywhere near their shores, and rarely ever anchor while fishing.

Marc,
That was one of the reasons for getting a new finder gps combo . It shows the line clearly . I also plan on staying clear enough from that line regardless just in case the gps is off a bit .
The only spot you may be able to fish both side is up towards Lake ST-Francis where Quebec borders the other shoreline, but I am still not 100% sure of that reg .
Good luck !

As a 2nd request I am asking anyone who visits Canada from the northeast States to help do something about this lunacy. Contact your Representatives. Perhaps we can find a way to snuff out the paranoia that pervades. If it continues as it is then the Terrorsts have won. As Joe's experience indicated our Border clowns play a game of tit for tat everytime the Americans step up security. We have to prove we are as serious about terrorism, drugs, illegals etc. as they are.
I will do my part locally. I know my MP. I see him all the time. I will ride him about ths issue till he's sick me and sick of it.

Marc, unless you have the required licenses etc. I would definitely stay away from U.S. waters as clearly as possible. Those machine guns strapped to the U.S. coast guards' sides are intimidating and very real.
Make sure you check the passports on the fish you catch too.
My father-in-law was drifting/ bottom bouncing near Morrisburg and drifted across the border due to wind direction/current. Although he was far from land he was stopped by a U.S. coast guard and was told he was 100 feet past the border and was fishing in US waters. When he was asked if he had any fish in his possession, he answered yes and was told to release the fish because they were "American fish". He wasn't going to argue given the fact they only gave him a warning for not having a New York fishing license or an I-68 at the time.
Every year now he renews his New York fishing license and his I-68 just in case.
