What kind of fish is this?

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

What kind of fish is this?

Post by ooochdigital »

I was fishing in a pond in Markham, Ontario and caught a few of these. I am not sure what it is. It looks like a type of carp but I know carp are usually gold in colour. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Pretty sure those two are different fish Chevy, the lips are different. Yours definatly looks like a sucker. Did this fish have a pointed dorsal fin oouch? The dorsal is a good way to tell between diferent types of carps, quillbacks and suckers. Those scales and mouth sure look like a carp, jus seems a little light colored.

The colors looks spot on for a redhorse, but that mouth and scales arent. suckers have Inferior type mouths, carp have Subterminal mouths. Redhorse x carp hybrid? I luv these threads that get me stratching my head!

I don't remember what the dorsal fin looked like. All i know is that the pond was shallow probably only 1 or 2 feet deep and these things were jumping like crazy. It does look like a carp/sucker hybrid to me. I am wondering how they got in there because it just looks like a storm pond created by the city.

If it was one big dorsal that extends all the way back to near the caudal fin i'm goin with a light colored carp. You would remember if the dorsal had like a 4-6inch quill off of it?

It was in Markham, Ontario. Major intersection 9th Line and 16th Avenue.
I looked at pictures of red horse's and the mouth on this fish seems alot different. I guess I could go back and take more pictures. They were very easy to catch.

definatly not a sucker, koi or asian carp. The mouth and scale size is all euro carp. Once you get another, try this site out.

can filter by different characteristics. Wish i'd have found it before BA's white bass picture.

It's a carp X goldfish hybrid 100%. The ponds around that area are full of them.

It has "pouty" lips which I find are like a sucker. They were pretty decent in size. One of them snapped my 6 lb test line.
