Bay of Quinte: 11.5" of hard ice and lots of fish!

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Bay of Quinte: 11.5" of hard ice and lots of fish!

Post by Jeff_C »

We had a great day yesterday catching lots of fish from varying year classes. The smallest would have been 14-15" and up to 29". (I know of at least one even larger one that won the tug of war battle.) There were quite a few in the 5-7lb range. One angler caught his first walleye and his first pike! Congrats! The cold yesterday just made for rosy cheeks on smiling faces. :D I will put up some pics within a couple of days.

There has been lots of discussion around unsafe ice, and this is great. Even where there is 10+ inches of ice still, there are pressure cracks that you do not want to put a machine anywhere near. Seeing as the ice is pretty much void of snow, you probably want to keep your speed down as well when venturing around especially in the dark. If you were to come up on a pressure crack at a higher speed, you probably couldn't get stopped in time.

If you take your time, do your homework, and keep safety first, there are lots of places to fish with great ice that are holding fish.

I wouldn't fish long reach. It was open water all the way down from Deseronto toward Thompson's Point on the west side. There is way too much water flowing through the bay right now. Most of the Quinte has really stained water (not quite a large double double, but closer to large regular.) Even if the past two days of cold weather does ice it back over (I'm not sure if it has or not), you wouldn't see me on it. There would be too much inconsistency in the ice. I would stick to areas without current until we have an extended period of really cold weather.

Be safe and good fishing.

Thanks for the heads up Jeff.

Looks like at least a week before I can get out to quinte again.

For now I'll be closer to home dialing in the crappie.
