Spoon feeding smallies! - October 25, 2009
When Anthony and I arrived at the ramp it was clear that the conditions were going to be an issue in our spot. We launched the boat and were totally stoked to get out there...might just have been a record that morning for our quickest launch ever. Wind was howling - we were game!
Got to out spot at 8:15 and immediatly starting fishing, covering water with jigging spoons and throwing out marker bouys when we got into a few fish. Ride there ended up being brutal and I had no eye protection to top it off. The plan was once we keyed in on them to stick it out in that area for the rest of the day. After fishing for a little while we found out pretty quick that the spoon tipped with nothing worked much better than the one with gulp. Also another thing was that the fish liked bigger profile baits as oppose to the smaller, more finesse styles spoons and plastics we were using last weekend. The fishing as soon as we arrived was a bit ridiculous, the fish were really letting you know they were hungry and a few doubles were had. Baits we used were the Northland Buck Shot rattle spoons. Sizes I had bought for pike in the winter time were the ticket, Anthony and I tried them all but one pattern was working one up better than the others. Drop-shotting was used a fair bit too...The drop-shot technique is great because you rarely loose a fish and is one of the best ways to fish deep. This spoons fish deep water fast and effective, sharpening the hooks often is something I can't stress enough for these.
Westward winds constant all day and made for really nasty boat control. There was a couple times saftey became an issue so we seaked shelter to take short breaks out of the wind. One thing about this lake is every piece of structure and shoreline feature looks better than the next. Seeing it also as possibility to maybe hook into another big largmouth we gave it a go for a bit with no luck....and back out we went.
Anthony caught a rod and reel in about 25FOW, must have been laying on the bottom for some time. Brought it home for dad to clean up one day. Got a good laugh when he was reeling the rod in, it apparently was tugging back. Line spooled and hanging my guess is the lure was caught on the rocks while trolling and it got yanked out of something! Sometimes our lines were actually getting tugged on by something fiesty.
2:00pm we collected the bouys and exhausted from battling the wind was honestly kind of glad to start packing it in and on our way back to land even though the beauty bronzebacks were still feeding strong.
Be safe out there and tight lines
Thanks for reading
