Heading to Muskrat lake next week.... questions on lakers

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Heading to Muskrat lake next week.... questions on lakers

Post by charbyc »

well fellas its been a great summer for me and i have one last week of holidays booked (ok i saved one week for deer hunting)

were heading to muskrat lake the place where we took our honeymoon...... (how do you like that boys we fished our whole honeymoon!)

well all i caught were pike last time we were there but my finder kept charting what i was sure were lake trout, right depth and temp and there were loads of em.....

so in anticipation of this i went and got myslef a big trolling reel and rod and spun some leadcore line on it....... i have a question though guys... how many feet down can you assume each colour of line will get you?

i really wanna boat a nice laker cause i know they are there!!! would be a beautiful thing!

and ill be honest..... i fish pickerel..... this will be my first time goin after lakers, any tips lads? i jig and troll for pickerel but i hear you must go deeper for the trout.........

so any advice would be appreciated. the boats already hooked to the truck and everything is packed i just gotta get this workday over with and were off!!!!!!

cheers fellas its gonna be a sweet weekend! Then while you suckers are at work i'll be on the lake all next week!!!!!!!

The general rule on lead core is that it will go about 5 feet down per color you let out.

Make sure you have a fluoro leader on it before attaching your spoon to it.

I know lots of guys that jig for lakers with success but I'm a troller so never tried it and can't really comment on it.

Never fished Muskrat either so I can't be of much help other than depth the core goes.

Good luck.

With a gang troll you will be looking at 7-10ft per colour. But it all depends on the lbs test of it. That is a great link Todd. 8)

fished there today, just fished till noon and got lakers , one 6pounds the about 2 pounds also lost a couple. 80 feet down in 110-120 feet of water . One came on lucky strike johnny green (thanks Dan at manotick bait got it the day before) and the other on a williams wabler (silver). Hope that gets you started.
